r/bose on Reddit: Questions about the 700 Surround Speakers
October 12, 2021 -

Hi all. I've had the 900 soundbar for about a month, my first Bose product! I have been thinking about getting the 700 surround speakers to go with the 900 soundbar.

I don’t really need / can’t really have much more bass response, but I find the soundbar by itself lacks the separation I am used to with another sound system in my room (a pair of Echo Studios).

Would adding the 700s help “fill out” the soundstage and make music sound better? Obviously they are on the expensive side of things, hence my hesitation to ask for any tips before ordering. It still baffles my mind that I purchased the 900 soundbar from their refurb site for $679 and the going price is nearly equal for the 700 surrounds... seems very out of wack.

All of the reviews tend to comment on the 700 surround speaker’s abilities regarding film/tv but as opposed to music (not to mention, most people say they sound entirely too quiet, that you have to boost the levels in the Bose app or do the blanket-covering trick when rerunning AdaptIQ).

At least Bose has a 90 day return policy if, lets say, they actually happen to release 900 surrounds / atmos surrounds within those three months… since it seems that is still maybe a possibility...

I would greatly appreciate any advice!

What is the difference between Bose 500 and 700? - Quora
Answer: The major difference is in the size. Similar to DTS it is also a bit larger. Bose 700 supports surround sound technology. It also has upgraded audio. This always depends on your choice.

Bose Surround Speakers 300 and 700 impedance? | AVS Forum
That would suggest the power is coming from the box. So if the speaker’s impedance is something on the typical side… you should be able to substitute any speaker with the same impedance. ... I would imagine the wireless signal is encrypted to force people into the Bose ecosystem.

I currently own the SB Smart Ultra and BM700. Would adding the Bose Surround Speakers 700 be a good choice at this time, or would it be better to wait for a newer model since the SS 700 is an older product?

There is no way of knowing when or if Bose will change their rear speakers. Bose does not change out speakers because they are a few years old. A good example of that is the Jewel Cube speakers, first released in 1996 they were included with multiple different systems until 2014 . But they continued as the redesigned Jewel Cube series II and sold with systems until 2021 . They were only discontinued because the SS700's speakers were better.

The surround speakers 700 are almost 10 years old and use tech that's older than that. The 700s were originally part of the Lifestyle 650 system which was a 5.1 system introduced in 2016. Bose rebranded them as the 700s and began selling as soundbar add ons. There's been no indication from Bose as to if or when they're going to come out with new ones. I bought the 700s to use with my soundbar 900 and bass module 700, then returned them after a couple of days. I think they're a sonic mismatch to the Atmos bars which create a high and wide sound field up front that became linear at the rear of the room because the surrounds weren't designed for atmos setups. They were also anemic sounding and the power brick/wifi transmitter and mess of cables were going to require work for me to conceal. My brutally honest take is they looked and performed like surrounds from one of my early 2000's home theater in a box setups. They added to the overall sound in some instances, but I found they subtracted more than they added. If you're in the US and want to try them, I recommend getting them directly from Bose, so you have a 90 return/refund window if you don't like them.

Bose 700 full system vs AVR and speakers | AVS Forum
I started to looking into alternatives and I found QA speakers at a very attractive price point, but I have no experience with that particular speaker company. I searched the forum and a lot of people recommend kef, so I started to look into it. I am trying to decide if I can put together a better system for 2k or I should stick with the Bose system. Any help would be appreciate it!!! ... If simplicity and easy connectivity is your goal, the Bose Soundbar is fine. If you wish to have a theater with multichannel surrounds and ear splitting volumes and bass to rock your neighbor’s house, then you might want to go with an AVR-Speaker system.
