Canon R8 vs Sony a7C Camera Comparison – Which is Better? - The Slanted Lens
September 1, 2023 - But people who want a small camera they carry with them are probably going to love that a7C. But for me, Canon wins. So these two cameras have very different batteries. And the batteries really make a big difference. The R8 has a very small battery. It doesn’t give you a lot of continuous shots.

Canon R8 vs Sony A7C
I found the a7c i to have pretty bad ergonomics compared to any canon camera. The a7c ii is much better but also more expensive. For me, I knew what lenses i wanted and knew they were on the RF eco system, so I didn’t really care, and really that is the main point Sony has above canon. 1.) rolling shutter on r8 is way better than a7c. Use electronic first certain and it’s basically nonexistent. 2.) ibis for photos is not really that useful, these cameras have amazing iso performance and keep in mind if your subject moves, it’ll look blurry regardless 3.) ES is quite good, but the gyrometric data on the A7c is much better in that regard 4.) I’ve actually heard the Sony app isn’t as good, but from my actual experience i can say the canon app works on iPhone quite well, idk about Androids. Id say the r8 is the clear winner here, the a7c is beginning to show its age and unless it is significantly cheaper, it is not worth it over the r8. If you are mainly a video shooter id recommend stepping down from full frame though. The a6700 or r7 with a wide aperture lens will sacrifice much less, and both of those cameras are amazing choices that don’t really sacrifice much like the r8 or a7c do. More on reddit.com

Sony A7c for Canon EOS R8?

Scope of Use: I am passionate youtuber and want to pursue as my career in long run by making youtube videos, but I will be getting into interiors and real estate photography or into latch into any freelance work to fund my passion for YouTube

Sounds like use cases where pretty much any camera with good enough video features will do. Both of the cameras you have in mind are more than good enough.

I was convinced to purchase A7C but when I went to the store yesterday, the salesman introduced me to the Canon R8. On paper, Canon R8 has everything better than the A7C, except the battery life and IBIS.

Batterly life of R8 is surprisingly poor on paper, though typically the rated numbers are very conservative. But 150 shots using EVF is extremely low rated number. Poor battery performance may hamper video use more than still use as it is a more power hungry use case.

I'd pick the Sony for your use case simply due to this. Other than that the differences in performance are minor - the EVF of Sony is tiny though (and that Canon's EVF isn't breaking any size records eihter), but I imagine movie use is with the screen instead.

What next; Canon R8 or Sony a7C?
If you're running on a budget and want affordable glass, Sony is the way to go. Not only are there all the 3rd part options but the used market is very active. I run the Tamron 28-75 G2 as the standard zoom and the price to performance is great. Get the original used for even better value. More on reddit.com

Canon R8 vs Sony a7c : r/Cameras
July 2, 2023 - A7C has 10 FPS mechanical shooting, which is faster than R8's 6 FPS electronic first curtain. But, R8 goes upto 40 FPS electronic shutter while A7C still only does 10 FPS. IMO, A7C is a very well rounded camera and would be my choice. ... The ecosystem around Sony's E-mount is much more robust ...

June 23, 2023 - With the pancake 28mm and the v small 50mm f1.8, it is actually smaller and lighter than the a7C. (The sony lenses are bigger.) EVF and LDC on R8 are much better.. I think the sensor is about equal, so is autofocus. If you shoot a lot in jpeg, I think canon colors are slightly nicer..

Canon EOS R8 vs Sony A7C: What is the difference?
November 1, 2018 - This Small Light weight camera has most of what the R8 Mark II has, with the added bonus of outstanding Video options. The Auto Focus is insane, it's ability to track multiple people by both left and right eyes, even playing sports. I was concerned about it Missing IBISI have not noticed any difference, It'd fast, and easy to use. The Cons: Well the Battery life of the LP-E17 is poor, keep multiple spares charged up. RF Lens costs. RF Lenses are noticeably more expensive and Canon has for now not allowing RF OEM lenses with AF.

Canon R8 vs Sony A7c Full Comparison - PXLMAG.com
The Canon R8 sports a classic DSLR-style body - chunky but with robust grip contours. At 461 grams and measuring 133x86x70 mm, it’s surprisingly light for a full-frame mirrorless, considering Canon packed in a fully articulating 3.0-inch touchscreen with 1.62 million dots. The electronic viewfinder (EVF) boasts 2.36M-dot resolution with 0.76x magnification, lending a pleasant, immersive shooting experience. Sony’s A7c takes a different route - it’s essentially a full-frame sensor squeezed into a compact, rangefinder-style shell, measuring 124x71x60 mm and weighing 509 grams (so slightly heavier despite the smaller footprint).

r/canon on Reddit: Canon R8 vs Sony A7C
June 6, 2025 -

*sry if my English is not so good*
I will be posting this on canon and sony reddit's, but with some different questions.
I know this has been asked many times, but I didn't really find an answer suitable for me.
I made a list about my pro's and con's of both cameras. (check the attached photo)

▪︎ So first of all, my main (pro) for the R8 is the 4k60 video, i need the 60fps smooth video for certain things, and if I want 60fps on the A7C, I need to record in 1080p (can't record in 1080p because I need to crop in the video, and you CAN'T crop a 1080p video).
▪︎ I really like the IBIS is the A7C, but is it that good for low light (I can use a slower ShutterSpeed)? Only thing I know its horrible for moving videos (for example vloging). But I heard you can disable it.
▪︎ Also I don't really care about R8's battery life.

▪︎ I already have 2 cameras that I am going to sell

  1. A7i with 28-70mm (f/3.5-5.6)FF and an 55-210mm (crop-sensor lens)

  2. Canon 250D with 18-55mm kit lens and a 50mm f/1.8

Now I am looking for an cheap wide angle for wloging - now I have my eyes on the CANON RF 16MM F2,8 STM for R8 or Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 for A7C. That when I will have the money I will by something like a 24-70mm (f/2.8)

So my questions are:

  1. Is the rolling shutter that bad on the R8? I am definitely not doing bird photography or any sort of fast things.

  2. Do I need the A7C IBIS? I will turn it off for videos if ill buy the A7C, but is it worth losing IBIS by buying the feature fuller R8?

  3. Is the ES good in the R8 or you would prefer Gyrometric data like on the A7C?

  4. I have an insane screen on my Samsung S24U and I would like to use it as a monitor. I heard that Canon isn't really as strong as Sony for supporting these kinds of things.

  5. And do you have some other FullFrame camera suggestions for 1000€? (used camera)
