Chassis Q-Fan Control | AnandTech Forums: Technology, Hardware, Software, and Deals
May 2, 2013 - On my P8Z77-V Pro, Q-Fan can control 3-pin and 4-pin PWM fans on all chassis fan headers. You have to use a 4-pin PWM fan for the CPU fan(s) only; if you use 3-pin on the CPU headers, they'll run at 100% all the time. To answer the last part of OP's question, if your fans are plugged into a hardware fan controller, Q-Fan will have no effect.

December 4, 2014 - That lets you control it with speedfan-- provided speedfan has those PWM modes set to "Software Control" -------- I found a solution-- You can't get around the CPU fan header requiring PWM, but who says you have to plug a noisy fan that actually cools the CPU into the CPU fan header? Since it runs at 100% I plugged in my quietest fan to the CPU fan header, but it's actually just a case fan. The rest of the Chassis fans are on the same voltage plane, but they can be software controlled via IT8721F's PWM3, so I just plugged my actual CPU fan (still 3-pin) into one of those; the rest are chassis fans behind and above the CPU.

ASUS may force it to stay on. ... I agree, although it is the chassis fan, not the CPU fan.

May 13, 2012 - You may enable all the items since your cpu supports them. Q-fan should keep the cpu fan noise down if you don't like the setting now. I use the "quiet" setting after calibrating the fan.

r/buildapc on Reddit: Asus Q-Fan Control Question!
January 7, 2019 -
Hi all,
I'm using 6 120mm xspc rgb fans connected through a 12v xspc 4-pin pwm hub. The hub then connects to chassis 2 fan header on an asus z390-e motherboard. The fans are rated for 800-2200 rpm. When I set the fan curve to the very minimum speed (20% i think), for some reason the fans start at 1240 rpm... I was confused at how it started at this speed but after some guessing I figured its 800rpm+(20% of 2200) which comes to 1240 rpm. Is there a way to set the minimum speed at 800?
Thank you so much and please let me know if I need to clarify on anything!

Set the minimum percentage to 0? Based on what you've already found (20% going to 20% of max duty cycle) then it seems to me that setting it to 0 should set it the the fans minimum duty cycle.

Percentage and fan speed cannot be calculated. Every fan responds to PWM signal in their own way. Even if their speed range was identical, one can run 1200 @ 20% and the other 1200 @ 40%. You can try DC control but that might dim the leds.

March 6, 2024 - How come ASUS motherboards don't allow manual DC Chassis Q-Fan Control to be set below 60%? I notice this was also true with the Hero Z170, but I was able to work around this in the advanced monitor settings (and as long as I didn't ever go back and change anything in Q-Fan Control).
