Okay, story time. Many years ago I worked at a gourmet grocery store in Chapel Hill, NC (Tarheels know which one I'm talking about). At the employee exit, there was a rack where "no-charge" items were put for employees to take. Dented cans, banged up boxes, etc, got marked "N/C" and placed on that back rack for employees to enjoy, nice little perk of putting up with all the nonsense that place dished out to its people. Around easter, I found a chocolate bunny on the N/C rack, and I snagged it. I took it home, all excited about my treat. When I took it out of its box, the chocolate didn't seem real high quality--it felt sort of rubbery, and when I broke it against the countertop it sort of shattered rather than breaking into chunks. I figured it was just old (and was on the N/C rack for that reason). I picked up one of the shards, put it in my mouth and chomped. In my mouth, it actually shattered again between my teeth. It was sort of crumbly. It had no flavor at all, but it had suddenly turned into a gluey sort of paste. It was a few chews later before I realized: this wasn't chocolate. It was a display bunny, made of hard wax. By this time it had sort of melted in my mouth, and was stuck hard to my teeth and gums. I couldn't spit it out, I couldn't really get it out of my mouth at all. Brushing my teeth didn't reach all of it. I think there might still be some in there. tl;dr: +1 for hollow. -50 for wax. Best and Worst Chocolate Easter Bunny — Brian Francis
September 2, 2025 - Giving a decapitated chocolate rabbit to kids can send a confusing message. Design: I appreciated that the bunny was wearing a button down and textured pants. It’s hard to find rabbits with a good fashion sense. But this bunny’s facial expression was too intense. Obviously, he was wired on his own sugar content. Tasting Notes: My taste tester and I both found the McCormicks bunny too sweet, gritty and lacking any real chocolate flavour.

What? That isn't a real chocolate bunny? - County Road 407
February 9, 2021 - Are any of the chocolate bunnies at the store real chocolate? Hmmm. I suppose I could visit a mall, stand in line with terrified screaming toddlers and ask the Easter Bunny? Um, no thanks. I’m fine with eating the fake stuff anyway. Especially the white chocolate.

The Untold Truth Of Chocolate Easter Bunnies - Mashed
October 10, 2023 - The Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals, commonly known as the SPCA, launched a campaign in Canada encouraging people to chow down on chocolate bunnies for Easter instead of buying actual bunnies as pets. As CBC News reported in 2018, the Montreal SPCA receives hundreds of abandoned rabbits each year when the novelty wears off and the reality sets in that looking after a rabbit actually requires a lot of time and effort.
