Is there a difference between “Chrome” and “Google” apps on iOS?
They are, in fact, different. The "usual" thing you brush off is kind of key. One is a full web browser, with everything that means. One is not. The Google app is also Discover, Lens, Gemini, and a variety of their other unique and specific Google functions, while not being a web browser. I don't have an iPhone, so I've never seen any indication that it has tabs in the Google app, but probably because it's a web wrapper and has SOME browsing functionality. But it's not inherently a web browser. More on reddit.com

You can't install extensions in Chrome on iOS.

I also don't believe any browsers have extensions on iOS.

r/chrome on Reddit: Is there a difference between “Chrome” and “Google” apps on iOS?
April 1, 2025 -

I’ve taken a quick look at both app and it feels like the only difference between them is the fact that you can quickly switch accounts on Google (this is important to me), while on Chrome you have to log out and then log into another acc.

Are there any other significant differences between the two? Because if not - I’m wondering why these two don’t just get merged to have all the smaller features that may be different on each of them?

I know ths usual “google is a search engine and chrome is a browser” stuff, but I don’t see how in this case there is a difference in practice.

Both let you have many tabs, both search, both have history…

I’ll appreciate your help!

Not really Chrome has the same discovery camera baked in. Google IS a browser that operates identical to Chrome. You can do both in both the same way, by typing into the address bar. Whatever you are searching for, researching, or identifying with Lens. You can even use Gemini, a separate app BTW. But both operate identically... You can either... A. Entire an address or B. Search for anything The separate app doesn't even include the Google One features of your account info, which would help differentiate the two. Tge UIs are different as Google's is just the news or discovery deal that you get swiping left on the Home screen from a Samsung phone. Not sure how it works on Pixels or the rest but it's (Google's app) is a waste of a GB of space storing your personal everything. Where and wheb u go what you buy with Google's Pay, who and wheb you call or text or points of interest it can direct you to. It's simply a tracking app for siphoning more data from you via your phone. Which is always with you... I just realized that this is a few months old but I found it looking for the same answer and I've learned that everything accessible in Chrome via your settings is redundant to the app. Dump it. Uninstall, it's nothing but an invasion of your privacy incessantly

Interested in the number of people that either exclusively use safari over chrome, vice versa, or maybe even both on iOS. I end up with both browsers on iOS - I mostly use chrome on windows and Mac (video playing and group tabs are better for me), but prefer safari on iOS. I end up with duplicate tabs in both depending on where I started the search.

edit Giving Brave a go, might be a good option. Scratch that, trying Arc instead.

The iPhone and iPad versions are nearly identical, with the iPad allowing more screen real estate to enjoy the beautiful tabbed browsing that Chrome has to offer. The app uses its address bar as a universal text entry for both search and URLs (unlike Safari's two separate boxes).
