Are rollover cables and crossover cables the same, just different pins?
No not the same at all. Rollover is for connecting to Cisco and other console ports, which are serial ports that have an RJ45 jack the same as network ports. Typically the rollover cable connects to a serial port (or USB serial port more commonly these days) via a DB-9 to RJ45 adapter. Hope that helps. The crossover is hub to hub, switch to switch, hub to switch, router to router, computer to computer, router to computer etc. It is for like device to like device... Where the straight-thru cables connect switch to computer, switch to router etc. Hope that helps. All of this is less important since Gigabit Ethernet has auto crossover in its specification. DIY Cisco RJ45 console cable?
No. The cable you linked is a USB to TTL cable. IIRC the Cisco rollover cable is akin to a null modem (i.e. the pinout on one end is reversed, hence the name "Rollover") RS-232 cable. You can hack a RJ45 cable (Google "Cisco Rollover cable pinout") and solder it to a DE-9 (again search for "serial port pinout") connector, then you'll need to get a USB to RS-232 adapter and plug your newly made cable into it More on reddit.com

Serial Console over RJ45 Ethernet-Patchpanels / RS232-Ethernet-Pinout?
You don't need to do anything special on the patch/extension side. Any RJ45 coupler/patch will result in no wire transposition. Only one cable in the chain needs to be a rollover, the rest can be Ethernet-spec. So: ACS - Rollover - Anything - Switch This is similar to how you can extend your laptop rollover cable with a standard female-female coupler and patch cable. Get some flat, 8-wire cable to make your rollover cables if you want to make your life easy and ditch anything DB9 unless necessary. I know this from direct experience. We use Avocent everywhere. Feel free to ask if you have more questions. More on reddit.com

March 5, 2013 -

So I don't doubt that most everyone on here has a good-sized coil/mashup of Cisco standard-issue light blue RJ45 to DB9 cable in their bag. Here's how to get rid of that clutter and just use a straight-through CAT5 cable for all your console needs.

First you'll need a DB9 to RJ45 adapter, I got a blank one here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000067RSY/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $1.80 for a blank adapter, when it comes it will come with the pins out from the DB9 part.

Once you have the adapter you'll need to set the pinout. When you look at the DB9, you'll see numbers for the pins, here's the pinout for a "internal rolled" cable:

2 - Black

3 - Yellow

4 - Brown

5 - Green (could also try red, they are crimped together on the one I took apart)

6 - Orange

7 - White (possibly grey)

8 - Blue

Connect pins FULLY into adapter until they click, twist DB9 plug to shorten cables and seat in adapter, plug USB to Serial adapter and Cat5 in from the Cisco device and you're ready to drop some configs. Hope this helps everyone carry one less thing in their bags. :)

Rollover cable - Wikipedia
February 3, 2026 - A rollover cable (also known as a Yost cable, Cisco cable, or console cable) is a type of null-modem cable that is used to connect a computer terminal to a network appliance's console port. This cable is typically flat and light blue in color, to distinguish it from other types of network cable. The name rollover alludes to how the pinouts on one end are reversed with respect to the other, as if the flat cable had been rolled over.

When to Use Rollover vs. Console Cables
For many years, the default console cable was the Cisco rollover cable (RJ45-to-DB9, light blue, flat). Today, however, console cables also include USB-based connections, such as USB-A to RJ45, USB-A to mini-B, or USB-C to USB-C. The pinout of a console cable depends on its type:
