After sitting on the chair in store, we knew this chair would be more comfortable than either the Ektorp or Jennylund. It came home with us that day (which is probably my favorite part of buying furniture at Ikea!). We put it in the same spot that the Jennylund has been. It definitely takes up a good bit more space, but the open bottom makes if feel less heavy in the room.

I am moving to a larger place and I really want to get a dedicated reading chair, as I dislike reading on the couch or in bed.
After doing a ton of research, it seems that IKEA is still the best game in town when it comes to the cross section of longevity and affordability, so I will be buying this (and a few other items) from IKEA when the time comes.
Please tell me your favorite IKEA reading chair (or chair + ottoman combo).

Strandmon is great and the velvet ones are pretty cat resistant to a point. It’s just a great design. If I were going for looks and needed a chair I’d go with the oskarshamn but I think it has a bit of a bigger presence than the Strandmon.

Just set up my reading room! Yellow strandmon chair and ottoman, with a tartan blanket draped over the back, walnut billy bookcase and a ton of fake plants (not enough natural light in my reading room for any real plants to survive ☹️) a fish tank and some fairy lights and it’s divine! Saving up for a barometer floor lamp and it will be complete

I live in the Chicago area. There are quite a few, local “used” office equipment/furniture companies. Many have “showroom” style areas, but if you have something more specific in mind, they can walk you through their overstock area. Office equipment comes from liquidation due to office closure & Office equipment dealers offer “trade-in” credit. That excess stock moves to the secondary market, “used office furniture”. I have walked a “used office furniture” warehouse. There is nice furniture available. Be it from an executive office, a conference room, visitor’s office or just plain old, good condition, used furniture. I suggest measuring the “available chair/desk footprint” at home (since being in a larger showroom space might skew the perceived furniture size) then finding a local company with “used office furniture”. Get out there to try a few chairs. Be prepared to bargain and make an offer! I expect WFH office has softened the market. I think you can find a “gently used” chair, that meets your need for comfort, is of better quality and not necessarily much more expensive than an Ikea chair. I like Ikea and live close to one. Given a choice of chairs, I personally would hit the secondary market. Hope that helps!
