The reason there is no easy way to index into a string and get just one character is that once you go outside the realm of ASCII, strings become a lot more nuanced and treating them as an "array of characters" is almost always incorrect. Tom Scott has a wonderful rant on YouTube about Unicode and how UTF-8 is actually a giant hack, which might explain in more detail why "array of chars" is the wrong way of thinking about strings. To start you off on your assignment, String.split splits strings on a regular expression and this expression may be an empty string:
String[] ary = "abc".split("");
Yields the array:
(java.lang.String[]) [, a, b, c]
Getting rid of the empty 1st entry is left as an exercise for the reader :-)
Note: In Java 8, the empty first element is no longer included.
