Hi, I’m looking for a recommendation on the safest convertible car seat. Not an all-in-one, just a convertible. I am getting so overwhelmed by the options, it seems like every site I found is sponsored, so I don’t trust that.
I found the Chicco NextFit Zip as highest rated on a couple sites - but it’s discontinued!
My only concern is safety rating, with easy to clean being relevant but not super necessary (we have a handheld spray vacuum cleaner). Budget is up to $400-ish. We have mid size SUV and this is the only car seat in it, so size isn’t an issue.

I don’t know of any seats that allow the use of a “handheld spray vacuum cleaner” in their care instructions. Some are machine washable and usually specify a gentle cycle. It is very important to stick to the car seat manual when washing your seat.

I was reading up on the Evenflo Maestro carseat and saw that Consumer Reports and BabyGearLab have fully opposite crash test results for the seat. Consumer Reports puts it in its 'Best' tier in its crash test and babygearlab says it's in their 'worst' tier.
Does anyone have any perspective on why they'd be so different?
Could it be that Consumer Reports was testing it as a 5-point harness seat and BabyGearLab was testing it as a seat belt booster? It's not clear on either site. Would a 2-in-1 seat perform so differently in harness vs booster mode?
I'm not sure if there are generally known differences in the tests they do and which one people like more.

(CPST) All seats on the market have passed federal crash and safety standards (in their respective jurisdictions). Anything additional to that is 3rd party testing. Consumer Reports (I’m unsure about BGL) can also be misleading. They will give a seat a bad rating if the seat breaks in their testing, however what’s important is not if damage is sustained to the seat in a crash, but whether or not the child is injured. Think of it like a bike helmet after a bike crash. It will likely look completely trashed - but was the head inside it protected?

All car seats pass the same federal safety tests, it’s a pass or fail test. A site like Baby Gear Lab that relies on ad-click revenue cannot feasibly test car seats to the full extent required by federal regulations (every size test dummy, every mode, etc.) Crashing that many car seats, dummies, and test benches is expensive - plus they have to pay for testing facility time. Based on this, I don’t put much weight on their ‘ratings’. The safest seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and that you use correctly every time. _ From an Evenflo webinar: A seat with 6 Recline positions would require approximately 18 test runs (double sled so 2 seats tested during one crash test) and 36 car seats. This would be one round of testing and additional tests would be required depending on the test results and where we are in the development process The example above would take 2.5 - 3 days to complete and at a cost of about $36,000 This only speaks to the cost of testing not of the seats, shipping and engineering time

There’s no safety rating system. A lot of reviews are subjective because they’re written by an author who is working with a particular vehicle or set of vehicles. I’ve written or co-written over a dozen reviews and they were as accurate as possible through the work of a team, but there are always aspects that are opinion. The best seat is what works for your child, your vehicle, and your budget, and is a seat that you can use correctly every time.

My LO is rapidly outgrowing her infant car seat and we need to switch to a convertible ASAP but we are having indecision and seeking advice/recommendations/experience.
Important to us:
Safety, good crash test ratings (not sure whose crash test ratings to trust)
rear facing as long as possible
preferably car seats withOUT flame retardant chemicals
preferably car seat that is easy to clean
slim fit might be nice since Mom likes to sit in the back with the baby and we may have another HOWEVER we anticipating our baby to be above average height so she might benefit from extra leg room
We are currently considering Chicco Nextfit Max ClearTex (more leg room) vs. Britax Poplar S (Slim Fit & anti-rebound bar). However, some websites (Baby Gear Lab) gives these average crash test ratings. We are a little confused and open to all advice and alternative car seats. We would like to make the decision soonish. Thank you in advance for all your help. We are in the United States.

I have the Nuna rava and baby gear lab rated it pretty high. It’s on sale rn too for $399 at Nordstrom (only the color named Curated) . ETA: we purchased the Chicco Clear Tex All in one as well- but have yet to install it since my little is usually in the car with me or we take my car. Those were my top two after lots of research

Trigger Warning: Car Accident Just putting this out there, my Graco 4Ever DLX All in One Convertible car seat was in a MAJOR accident in 2019 with my 2-year-old front facing in the center seat in the back. All he got was a little bit of a black eye, while I was hospitalized for 2 weeks and had to relearn to stand and walk over the next few months. Our auto insurance agent also commented that the car seat was known for being a good one for safety based on accidents they had dealt with. I know this is outside the brands you’re considering, but wanted to share that I’ve seen it in action and was so grateful we had a good carseat that night.
