June 8, 2024Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel?
We bought a desk,rug and bedroom set at crate and barrel and have loved them. 10 years in and everything still looks new (no kids though!). If you’re moving they give you a discount. We also have RH lamps and a side chair. The chair hasn’t held up as well and the bottom fabric (under the chair) has disintegrated even though we have almost never sat in it. Based on this and the overall prices I personally wouldn’t buy RH again. More on reddit.com

Hi, everybody! My husband and I just bought a new home and I’m working on furnishing it. The last time we furnished a house, I purchased a lot of furniture from Wayfair and regretted it almost immediately, as the quality was super poor and the all of the pieces felt so cheap. I’m trying to find higher quality furniture this time around and just purchased a bed and nightstands from C&B (will post links below). I’ve never bought from them before and am worried now that I overspent for Wayfair quality furniture. Our couch is from Arhaus and it’s lasted us SO long and feels like such high quality - wondering if I should have just spent a bit more to buy from them instead? Any insight is appreciated! Thank you!

I’d look more at the actual materials and construction than the brand. Crate and Barrel sells multiple levels of quality, like a lot of large stores. The nightstands are MDF with veneer, and some parts are mahogany (probably the legs). You’ll need to baby them a bit to keep them looking nice, because unlike solid wood, if they get scratched or stained you can’t just sand and refinish. Veneer tends to lift or peel over time and you’ll need to be careful with liquids so it doesn’t bubble. If treated well, it will still look nice for a long time. Wood veneer will look and perform better than straight up mdf that is just textured and painted to look like wood. Look at the actual listings of what you bought on wayfair and see what the actual material of them is. Solid wood furniture is pricy these days, and you clearly are into really modern styles. Solid wood modern furniture will be expensive. That may not be worth it for you. Alternatives are things like what you’ve picked out, or solid wood furniture in more classic styles. For the bed, look at the actual fabric. You will want something with both softness and durability. This is almost 80% polyester, 12% rayon, 8% linen. Polyester is durable and stain resistant, and you are choosing a white fabric bed, stain resistance is probably important to you. Upholstered beds are never going to be as durable as wood beds, but they can still last a while if you take care of them. Sofas have suspension systems and they’re one of the pieces of furniture where quality matters the most - but also where it’s not so much brand that matters as how it’s made. The suspension system is the main part. I won’t go into it more because you already have a sofa and are happy but yeah, it’s about the materials and construction not the brand, and anything decently built will give you extensive details about it.
