Custom domain: Masked email aliases vs catch-all...any reason to avoid using a catch-all?
I've been running a catchall system for many years, as long as I can block an alias that has been compromised I'm pretty happy with them. I haven't found another system that handles multiple custom domains, catchalls and aliases as good as Fastmail though. Previously I used Simple Login with a more basic mail host, with SL to host the catch all/alias domains. Benefits are that it automatically creates new aliases when new email is received and it's easy to disable aliases. Big negative is that it has to forward the emails to your real mailbox and it does this by rewriting the headers. This breaks sender avatars and if you migrate elsewhere in future you can't reply to those emails. I'm currently giving Startmail a go as it also has aliases (unlimited) and custom domains all in one. However I have just discovered that if you have catchall on a domain then disable an alias, the email is still delivered as the disabled alias doesn't override the catch all. Which is probably a dealbreaker for me so I may soon be back on Fastmail! Another really secure awesome platform that handles aliases and mailboxes all in one is Forwardemail however the encrypted mail hosting accessed through IMAP was just so slow and kept timing out, to the point it wasn't really usable for me. I use a domain simply because you can't trust any email service to exist forever.. I'm happy paying £4 a year for a domain i can use for multiple things and have unlimited email addresses on.. I currently use it with simplelogin so i can have unlimited aliases and ban any that get leaked etc. More on reddit.com
