Hi all, I have the Dell G15 5511 laptop that came with the 512gb ssd. I've ran out of storage, so I decided to purchase a Crucial T500 2TB PCle Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD with speeds of 7400/7000mb to place into the second vacant ssd slot in the laptop to help with storage. I figured I'd leave the slot one as is so I could utilize both.
However, I just found out that the second ssd slot on the laptop only allows for Gen 3 ssd's and that it only allows up to 1TB as well per the Dell manual. I've read a few posts saying that 2TB works fine in that slot, but those reference gen 3 ssds.
So my question is, can I put in a 2TB gen 4 SSD into the gen 3 slot for solid results? Or should I put the new 2TB SSD into slot 1 and move the old 512gb SSD into slot 2? Or am I just better off replacing the 512gb entirely with the new SSD? Not the best with computers, so I appreciate any help!!

I want to buy a gen 4 ssd ie the wb black sn 770 but i have seen many forums saying that they are not getting only gen 3 speed on their laptop. On their site they have given that gen 4 ssd is supported upto 2 tb but didn't mention which slot. Can anyone confirm this with crystal disk benchmark?

Hello, I want to buy a 5511 and then put a second SSD in. However, on the support website, the circled NOTE makes me think that it is not possible to do this, as my configuration only ships with one 512 gig m.2 drive. What should I make of this? Can I have two m.2 drives running at once if I buy a config with only one drive? Dell seems to say no, but common sense says yes. Please help, thank you!

Do not put pice gen4 ssd in slot 1. There is hardware issue with g15 5511 even it says slot 1 supports pice4. My 980pro works at 20mb/s but works well in slot 2 with pice gen3.

Here are the Support docs for the machine: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/g-series-15-5511-laptop/docs there are links from there to the Setup and Specs and the Service Manual . The Storage specs page tells you about the internal slots. There is an interesting note in it: NOTE: If you have ordered only one solid-state drive, it can be upgraded to the solid-state drive of the same form factor but an additional solid-state drive is not supported. I'm not sure why there is a restriction there. It might be the internal slot is missing?!? The Service Manual SSD pages tell you how to remove and install SSDs in each slot. Before you purchase a SSD, it might be helpful to inspect the internals of the machine to make sure you know if there is a second slot and what size SSD it will take. The Service Manual has pages which instruct you how to safely open the machine. HTH.

It’s actually the first slot that’s NVMe Gen4, not the second. Tested that by putting the drive on the second slot and it was running at Gen3 speeds. I did buy the heat shield and bracket and have that installed. You may be right about not seeing the performance differences (yet) but I am attempting to future proof my pc as much as possible. I appreciate the reply but everything I am thinking is that this is software related not hardware as there are no Bios issues and the diagnostic displayed no errors. Interestingly enough, I noticed when the drive disappears the nvm standard express controller (in windows) also disappears. A diagnostic has showed that to fail.

@Calchalati Furture proofing is good (for desktops) as almost every component is upgradable, Your processor and GPU can not be upgrade since they are soldered on the motherboard. I still think its' too early for Gen4 SSDs. We are yet to fully utilize Gen 3 SSDs. Yes its fun running Crystaldismark and seeing those high numbers. But apart from them you never see SSD being utilized that much. Again these are my personal perceptions and just recommending other users not to pay double price for Gen4 SSDs yet For you step 1 should be replacing the SSD you bought (if it's under warranty or return period) as dell technical support would ask for that. Once you have replaced it and issue is not resolved. You can ask for a motherboard replacement.

OK, my final update: got my laptop, 2TB Gen3 SSD works smoothly without ANY problem. Did nothing: plug in and it works! See my picture below. It also means guys don't believe all the words in Dell official manual. I did speed test. The built-in 512GB has a 2500MB/1800MB and the Samsung EVO Plus (Gen3) has a 3475 speed/3245MB speed. System is pristine and installed nothing yet. Dissappointed that the built-in one behave inferior to the Samsung.

My order just got shipped. I guess I can let you guys know later if 2TB Gen3 SSD can be supported by 5511. Had never thought about there is still hard drive capacity limit nowadays.

On the documentation I have 2 types (2230 or 2280):
How I know which one I can choose? Can I have more than 1TB in total or it's by slot (if I have 2230) ?

Did 4TB ssd work in a single slot? I called dell technical support and they said bios will not detect the additional 2tb.
