Qualitative vs. Quantitative Research: What’s the Difference? | GCU Blog
May 20, 2021 - Another of the similarities of qualitative and quantitative research is that both look for patterns in the data they collect that point to a relationship between elements. Both qualitative and quantitative data are instrumental in supporting existing theories and developing new ones. Ultimately, the researcher must determine which kind of research best serves the goals of their study. Because qualitative data doesn’t allow for numerical data analysis, any analytical approach must be developed with care and caution. Here are a few different methods of qualitative data analysis, as follows:

Quantitative vs qualitative data
No that is absolutely 100% wrong. Those sizes are not quantitative data and mistaking this kind of 'quantitized' data for actual quantitative data is among the most common mistakes in statistics. Data is only really quantitative if there is an actual quantity being measured. Height, weight, number of something, duration. Things like 'rate on a scale from one to ten' are actually quanlitative data masking as quantitative data. There is no scale calibration, no useful sense in which a 4 is 'twice as good' as a 2. One has simply used numbers to create the illusion of measurement. Applying, say, a linear regression to this sort of data is going to be questionable at best, misleading at worst. Now if those sizes weren't made up, but an actual body measurement, like mens pants or suits, then you've got quantitative data. A result of this is that a great deal of statistical reasearch done by amateurs in business contexts is pretty untrustworthy. It is no surprise to me a instructor got this wrong. I'm honestly very impressed you saw through it. Most people actually believe throwing numbers into something makes it magically rigorous. You are now definitely smarter than most MBAs! What is an introduction to an essay on discussing the difference between qualitative and quantitative research?
Your introduction should open by explaining the importance of research in various fields, then introduce qualitative and quantitative research as two distinct but equally important methods. Mention how they serve different purposes, and set up the essay to explore their differences in detail. More on reddit.com

ELI5:the difference between quantitative and qualitative research methods?
quantitative literally means 'quantities' that can be measured in units of some kind. Usually analysed using mathematics of some kind. qualitative means 'qualities' that are more subjective to personal experience, this usually means personal anecdotes, stories, rough observations etc. More on reddit.com

ELI5: The difference between Qualitative research and Quantitative research?
You can use the roots of the words to help you remember the difference. Quantitative has to do with numbers, like the word quantity. Quantitative research measures things with numbers. How many people like coffee? How many trees fell over in the storm? How many books do people read each year? You then take these numbers and maybe do some statistics or other math to come to a conclusion. Qualitative research has to do with looking at qualities. Maybe you taste a bunch of coffees and compare them in some way. Maybe you talk to people about their experience during a big storm and compile a report about how different people reacted to the stressful situation. Have a bunch of people read a book and describe it. These are all about qualities of things, and generally don't use numbers. Quantitative => Quantity => Research using numbers and math. Qualitative => Quality => Research using opinions and experiences, generally not using numbers. More on reddit.com

What Is Qualitative vs. Quantitative Study?
There are two distinct types of data collection and study—qualitative and quantitative. While both provide an analysis of data, they differ in their approach and the type of data they collect. Awareness of these approaches can help researchers construct their study and data collection methods. Qualitative research methods include gathering and interpreting non-numerical data. Quantitative studies, in contrast, require different data collection methods. These methods include compiling numerical data to test causal relationships among variables.

Quantitative research is very well suited to establishing cause-and-effect relationships, to testing hypotheses and to determining the opinions, attitudes and practices of a large population, whereas qualitative research lends itself very well to developing hypotheses and theories and to describing processes such as decision making or communication processes. Quantitative research generates factual, reliable outcome data that are usually generalizable to some larger populations, and qualitative research produces rich, detailed and valid process data based on the participant’s, rather than the investigator’s, perspectives and interpretations (1).

r/askmath on Reddit: Quantitative vs qualitative data
August 23, 2023 -

Hi everyone! I am taking statistics for the first time and want to be sure I am understanding the difference between these two correctly. I know quantitative data is data that is counted or measured, and qualitative data is catagorical.

This example given left me confused.

Collecting the sizes and number of each individual and categorizing it as S, M, LG, and XL would be qualitative data. However, if the names of the sizes were to be changed to sizes 1,2,3,4, the data would then be quantitative. The reason given in class for this was "because numbers". Is this correct? Are the numeric sizes not arbitrary and thus still qualitative?

Thank you in advance for your help
