Almost all of the United States have produced at least one dinosaur fossil (the exceptions are the states along the along the Ohio River and around Lake Michigan, the northern portion of New England, Florida, and Hawaii), although most finds come from a rectangular area from Montana and North Dakota south to Arizona and Texas.

Dinosaurs are among the most popular and iconic fossil organisms, and dinosaur bones and tracks are favorite attractions at several National Park Service units. Body and trace fossils of non-avian dinosaurs have been documented from at least 21 NPS areas.

Fossils are found almost exclusively in sedimentary rocks—rocks that form when sand, silt, mud, and organic material settle out of water or air to form layers that are then compacted into rock. So in looking for non-avian dinosaur fossils in particular, paleontologists look for outcrops of sedimentary rocks that formed during the Mesozoic Era (251–65.6 million years ago), the geologic time period when non-avian dinosaurs lived.

January 8, 2025 - The world's longest continuous path of dinosaur footprints opened to the public in 2024 near Ouray. The 134 footprints made by a long-necked sauropod dinosaur are more than 150 million years old. You'll have to work a bit to see them, however. The tracksite is reached by the steep, 2-mile, out-and-back Silvershield Trail in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests. Six miles north of Cañon City, this active natural research area has been the site of fossil discoveries for nearly 130 years.

Overview Fossils of well-known species of large dinosaurs have been discovered at this site over the last 120 years. Many of the dinosaur fossils discovered at this site are on exhibit at museums around the country, including the Denver Museum of Natural History, and the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
