I bought my car off Facebook. I’m currently trying to resell my car and someone asked me if the title is clean and I don’t know anything about its history. When I tried to google it, a lot of websites came up wanting the VIN. Because I’m not sure what I’m doing I’m scared I’ll get scammed if I start clicking in random websites and putting my information in them.

A clean title means two things: Is it paid for/is there a lien on it? This should be relatively straight forward for you to answer. Has the car ever been declared a total loss and issued a salvage title? To answer this, you simply need to look at the physical paper title. All states will have a remark or some sort of branding on the physical title if it’s ever been salvaged. Even after it’s fully repaired, the salvage branding stays with it. If you want to know the history of the car and/or provide potential buyers with peace of mind, you can get a carfax for $5 at www.checkvin.io …it’s the exact same carfax you can get from carfax directly, just drastically cheaper for an individual report. Frankly, you should have already done a carfax when you bought the car…. and if you are looking at a replacement, be sure to do one before you buy again.
