You can approximate the size of the furniture by calculating the size of the smallest rectangular prism that would fit the furniture. You can then use that prism and compare it to the size of the space you want to store it in. If the prism fits, you're all good. If the prism doesn't fit, it's likely too small of a space. You can find the smallest rectangular prism by finding the longest distance on each axis and using that as one side of the prism. For example: Say I have a dresser which is made up of a 20 by 10 by 30 unit box. The top and bottom are surrounded by a 3 unit molding. The drawers including the knobs stick out 5 units from the box. The distance from the back to the front is 3 (the moulding) + 10 (the box) + 3 (the moulding) + 2 (the part of the drawers that stick out of the moulding) = 18 units. The distance side to side is 3 + 20 + 3 = 26 units. The distance top to bottom is simply 30 units. In real life you wouldn't need to take into account the different parts of the dresser, you could just take a tape measure from the moulding to the drawer knob. So that gives you a rectangular prism of size 18 by 26 by 30. I would then measure where I'm wanting to store it and see if it could fit an 18 by 26 by 30 rectangular prism. If it can't, I'm probably out of luck. If it's very close, you may want to try anyway and see if you can squeeze it in. Answer from anon_113606752 on reddit.com

It would not be easy though. Oh, do a search on the Miata "foamectomy". That might work for you, but the airbags might throw a kink in there. How do I figure out how much stuff I can fit in my car?
We have moved numerous times across country with just a mini van and two kids. The soft packs that go on the roof are amazing. We pack pillows, blankets, things we don’t need on the road but want when we get there in trash bags. The smaller the better because they fit better. Think large rocks in a box vs small ones… they fill up the holes better. We also only put boxes in square/rectangle places, like floor boards. Fill those spaces first with things you don’t need asap. Just be smart about where you stay the night and you won’t have issues. Don’t leave any valuables out to see, bring all of that in the room. More on reddit.com

r/theydidthemath on Reddit: [REQUEST] How to calculate if furniture will fit in my car?
January 31, 2022 -

The hatch of my car has an opening of 25 x 38 with a diagonal of 45 (units omitted because they don't matter). So a piece of sheet metal 45 wide will fit in diagonally... But what about something that's not flat? Say a dresser, 18 x 43. How do you calculate where the furniture intersects with the sides of the opening, and the maximum size of the object that will fit?

He also looks hella-uncomfortable in there, so maybe that doesn't work. ... Some good ideas fellas. In my 944 I brought the steering wheel back almost 7" and lean the seat back so I can fit with a helmet. In the IS300 I have thought about it but I don't want to get rid of the airbag steering wheel. The foamectomy is a possibility, although I think I'll leave it to a professional. My best friend sold me the car for about half it's actual value means even selling or trading it is complicated.

r/moving on Reddit: How do I figure out how much stuff I can fit in my car?
March 14, 2023 -

I’m moving cross country soon and wondering how on earth i figure out how much stuff i can fit in my car.

For those who have packed the car up… did you do any pre-planning to figure out what would fit?

I’ll also be either shipping some boxes or getting a UHaul Ubox, but have a fair bit of stuff i’d rather avoid shipping or packing in the Ubox. It’ll be me and my 15lb dog in the car. Would love any tips on how exactly you estimated what’ll fit in your car.
