Effective Java Review — A Must Read Book for Java Developers | by javinpaul | Javarevisited | Medium
October 13, 2025 - The number of items is also now ... 70+ on Effective Java 2nd Edition. If you have read previous editions and are in a little bit hurry, I suggest you start with the new Items. There is a beautiful table at the start of the book, which will give you a nice list of new items and which features Java 7,8, or 9, they cover. Btw, if you are wondering about new features released in Java 10, 11, 12, and 13 ...

Is Joshua Bloch’s Effective Java Still Valid in 2025? Is it worth it? | Java Prorgram Examples
August 29, 2025 - I know that Oracle is stopped supporting this version but believe me, there are a lot of big companies that are running on Java SE 11 and some of them on even Java SE 8. The 2nd edition of Effective Java has advised on generics, enums, annotations, and other recent Java developments, which is still valid.

r/java on Reddit: Opinions on "Effective Java 3rd Edition": did it live up to expectations?
October 5, 2018 -

(Trying again, because somehow the AutoMod decided I was asking for Java help (???) and deleted my previous post.)

"Effective Java 2nd Edition" is unanimously regarded as one of, if not _the_ must-have book for every Java programmer.

A couple years ago I toyed with the idea of buying a paper copy, but then Mr. Bloch confirmed he was working on a 3rd edition, so I decided to wait for it, wait for it. It finally came out in December 2017 (after several delays), and I was really excited to get it. But... at the last moment I decided not to buy it, because of some valid concerns that others expressed: mainly, that Java 9 itself was too new and its adoption was too low to have "tried-and-true best practices" already defined, so it was up to be seen whether the book would be as "effective" as previous editions (at least when it came to Java 9 items).

But! We're almost on the last quarter of 2018 now. It's been 9 months since the book was published. We have Java 10 and 11 already, a different release roadmap... Java 9 has been turned into a non-LTS release, and I'd say most developers have probably decided to skip Java 9 entirely and go for Java 11.

So I was wondering... Are the Java 9 items in Effective Java 3rd edition any good? What about the Java 8 ones? Is the 3rd edition of the book still a must-have for Java developers?

While heap allocation can be monitored with Java Flight Recorder (JFR), the sampling method in JFR only works on allocations. The JFR implementation may also miss allocations. In contrast, heap sampling in Java 11 can provide information about both live and dead objects.

May 11, 2025 -

I'm a computer science student trying to deepen my java skills and came across the book "Effective Java" by Joshua Bloch which was recommended all over reddit.

My question is: is it still relevant?

I just received my own copy from Amazon and realized that it's updated for Java 9 and currently the latest edition. As of today, Java SE 24 is the latest version.
