I keep seeing entertainment news about Elliot Page. I strive to be empathetic and open minded, and I respect his struggle as a transitioned man. Transitioning at all, especially in the public eye, requires tremendous strength of character. Having said that, I have and continue to find his bleatings exhausting and frankly, stupid. His privilege as a celebrity should not be used to bemoan his difficulty, but instead to highlight the challenges of the less privileged. He has failed to do so by making such a fuss about his struggle, and become simply tiring. I am not sure if this is a failure in PR, a personal failure of mine in interpreting his caterwauling, or something else. In any case, I find Elliot Page, and all related news, now completely exhausting.
I genuinely do not understand why people dislike him now. I haven't seen nearly as many discussions about him being a bad actor before he transitioned compared to after he transitioned.
I don't see anyone whining about Allison's hair compared to the comics, I don't see anyone whining about Luther's body compared to the comics, neither do I see anyone complaining about Ben not looking like a literal corpse, but when Vanya turns into Viktor, suddenly the world is on fire.
"He's an actor, he can still play female roles!" Yeah, but what if he doesn't want to? It's genuinely so annoying to see 'fans' demand and demand and demand with little to no respect to the wellbeing of artists.
"Vanya turning into Viktor was pointless to the plot!" Okay? God forbid characters have moments that don't contribute to the plot.
"Vanya is a male name, the character could have kept it!" Genuinely so tired of seeing this one. Yes, it's a masculine name in certain parts of the world, but that doesn't mean that he HAS to keep it. Changing one's name whwn transitioning is common, even if it fits the gender you're transitioning to. Quick, grab your pitch forks everyone! Charlie wants to become Bailey! Vanya becoming Viktor can also be seen as cutting the final string that tied him to his past. It's still the same character, just under a different name.
"The character is annoying! They're so quiet and suddenly they go apeshit!" What did you expect to happen? That his emotions weren't worth anything and that he wasn't worth anything is all that Viktor knew growing up. He finally starts to be able to build a life for himself, and season and after season he's met with what he's tried to leave behind. Anger, sadness and frustration can only be bottled up for so long.
Elliot Page isn't a bad actor. Sure his scenes may be a little awkward at times, but that's how the character he plays is. I'm so tired of people whining and sobbing and crying about everything that's wrong just because Elliot transitioned. if you don't like it then i have great news, watch something else! if it really ruins the show for you then just watch something else. Or stick to the comics, that's also a solution.
Edit: i'm not saying the seasons are fantastic, they all have different difficulties but it's hilarious to see people shit on Elliot for the acting in the fourth season as if he wrote the entire thing lmao. Actors work with what they're given, so it's not really Elliot's fault. Even if he was a producer, there's a lot of process that goes into movies and series.
People are allowed to have different opinions of course but it just gets really annoying when it's all centered around something they don't like, so they try to find a scapegoat.
I finished Pageboy last night and it was so sad and moving. My heart breaks for Elliot because he suffered not just trapped in his thoughts but in a body that wasn't truly his for so long. I thought I understood gender dysphoria but the torture of it was really brought out here. I really am glad I read this and that Elliott Page wrote his story because we need to hear more voices like his. Trans rights are human rights. If we can break down the walls of conformity all people will be better for it.
I personally saw him showing signs of wanting to transition before he came out not because of his masculine presentation but because of the way he navigated through the world. Idk how to explain it but he gave so much bro energy... Now that he has transitioned I see that he's trying too hard to be a stereotypical boy and I dont think he has found a place where he's comfortable with himself yet. I also wouldnt recommend anyone undergoing any gender surgery or hormones if uve come to the conclusion ure trans in less than a few years.
I think he shouldn't have gone to Oprah in such a weak mental state and he has to sort some things out before becoming a face of the trans movement. And talking about the mainstream trans community, he might be getting lovebombed because everything he posts on social media is either The Umbrella Academy or trans related. He did look happier at the Met Gala so maybe he's finally in the path of finding who he really is but he may still not be prepared to lead the trans movement until a few years pass by.
I've seen so many comments on facebook posts I've had to block, because Zuckerberg has clearly picked up on the fact that I'm trans, and is hoping that dumping trans positive posts with disgustingly transphobic comments will get me to engage with his failing apps, lol. Eat shit, Suckerberg, I'm blocking all your half hearted attempts at rage bait.
However, I see seemingly endless posts with interviews from Elliot Page, all saying he seem so sad, and the life has "left his eyes." Based on his memoir, I can clearly see that he is just much more comfortable in his stoicism, and the lack of pressure to be a "glossy starlet."
I'd love to know what my transmasc community thinks of this, as I simply believe it's transphobic rhetoric used to justify the idea that trans people are inherently unhappy on a fundamental level when presenting as their true gender. I've never seen Elliot as an overly bubbly presence, and he is generally known in Hollywood for his dry wit and down to earth sensibilities. Now that he carries that into his experience as a trans man, people seem to want to use his talents as a way to vilify him.
I'd love to hear your thoughts, as perhaps I'm missing something vital in this discussion!
I feel like I never see him anymore. He did one movie Close to You two years ago, but that's it for films. Things have been really quiet since he came out in 2020, and I find that sad. He's so talented.
The actor who threatened Elliot at a Hollywood party??
elliot is known for his good performances but for some reason i hate how he keeps shouting his lines in s4 and how it sounds monotonous, in some weird way.
he has the most screen time, i think, but i've seen more emotions from klaus than him. he looks, idk, like this 🗿🗿🗿 all the time and the way he deliver the lines it's like this 📉📈📉📈📉📈📉. not monotonous but sounds like it has a pattern. idk how to explain.
he's an okay actor. i probably just hated the final season of tua that i noticed that too.
Am I the only one who wished they casted a different actress/actor for Vanya?
The way he reads the lines make is sound so mopey. The actor for me has bad chemistry with the rest of the gang. Everytime there is a scene with him on it, all throughout 3 seasons, he feels so out of place and forced.
No hate on the actor personally, just thought he didn’t fit Vanya.
And as a fan of the comics, I wished they didn’t turn Vanya into Viktor. I don’t mind for Elliots gender really, but he can still act as a girl right?
I know I’m going to get a lot of hate for this but I’m trying to stay unbiased as this season was just pure shit anyways.
As I’m watching the fourth season, Vanya/viktor’s character just seems so fake? Before their transition, I feel like Elliot Page was able to give Vanya that emotionless broody energy. However, this season every scene where Viktor is yelling or standing up for themselves I can’t help but cringe. I loved season 3 version of Viktor so much more but I can’t figure out why?
Is it the acting this season? Bad writing? I usually love all of Elliot Page’s work but this time I feel so disappointed.
I just watched an Elliot Page interview on YouTube and the comments are disgusting! I mean, what right do you have dictating who he is? They are just soooo homophobic, transphobic, etc.
The main comments themselves were nice and supportive, but I barely saw a comment under them comment without a hate comment.
Sorry if it sounds like I have a tinfoil hat on right now, but I've been keeping my mouth shut about this for a long time and need to vent somewhere.
Everything Page does ever since they came out is very political, even the coming out post had a giant paragraph about anti-trans hate and said "enough is enough" like they're coming out because of that. It was also posted I think the same day or the day after some detransitioner hysteria lawsuit thing happened. It seems very weird to suddenly claim you're twans when you're in your early 30s and right after something happened that could have affected the rights of actual transsexual children.
They're friends with and platformed a nonbinary "comedian" (Jes Tom) who has said that ftm porn has "done a lot for [her] personally" and generally talks about her transition in a very fetishistic way. Another nonbinary "comedian" who I think identifies as a lesbian also posted her and Page together and tagged it as t4t. Just very weird "t4t lesbian" vibes from them and everyone they surround themselves with.
They can't even talk about their transition in a normal way. They recently posted themselves shirtless with of course the big rite of passage scars on full display, and said some very generic soulless things about dysphoria and mentioned how important it was for them to have "gender-affirming" medical care. They look and act like an AI generated trans activist.
I don't think Page is truly dysphoric, I think they are yet another mentally unstable lesbian dealing with internalized homophobia who after 2020 became convinced that they are a real twans man and is for some reason using this to become extremely political. It's sad that these people are who are representing us. It definitely won't change anytime soon because being open about having transitioned is a death sentence for normal people.
Seriously, gotta give credit where it's due! He was easily the stand out of the season!
I sometimes forget that he's straight up an Academy Award nominated actor. I hope now the show is over his career can get a bit of a renaissance!
Before I get downvoted to oblivion just read the whole post first.
I'm a new Umbrella Academy watcher, I love this show so much that I'm rewatching it again with my girlfriend. There are a number of things that bothers me in this show which people gloss over; for instance, Klaus and Dave's relationship to bullets missing every shot. Being real quick about it I'll explain my issue with those two things first.
Klaus and Dave: I only got into the show for Robert Sheenan being such a big Misfits fan. That said, this relationship is horrible because it is quite literally Klaus's personality. The relationship IS his personality trait. I hate when shows do this sort of thing. Klaus lives for Dave, without Dave he happens to be a drunken idiot. Why can't he be a strong character on his own without needing a relationship. Luthor and Allison is even worse but It isn't substantial enough for a comment.
Bullets: Have you noticed how people seem to be great at missing shots in the show? In that bowling scene, the family all run out of cover and are being shot at by semi automatic weapons. No one is hit. Same thing with the finale of season 2. NO ONE is hit. How????
Now for Elliot. I don't give a monkey's arse what Elliot decides to do outside of the show so long as it does not impact the Umbrella Academy. I'm writing this because I've seen comments claiming that if Elliot wants to play Vanya in a different way or change the character a little he should be able to do so. NO. That is not how it works.
Actors are playing a role. Elliot is NOT Vanya. He is portraying Vanya. Vanya is a woman whether you like it or not. I've read a little of the comics and as far as I know, there was no scene where Vanya was changed into a man. To even consider that is completely ridiculous. It would be like changing Harry Potter to Harlene Potter simply because Daniel Radcliffe changed his gender.
Outside of the show, Elliot can do whatever the hell he likes. Inside the show, he is Vanya.
-------------
Beyond that I have some questions that I hope someone can answer. Keep in mind, there are many people on this subreddit who are afraid to speak out incase of being downvoted. You can use this post to explain to all of us who are a little confused and please understand this isn't meant in a negative light; I'm genuinely just curious.
Since Ellen is now Elliot, does that mean his future roles in Tv and Film will be a male? So for example if he was applying for a role in Game of Thrones. Would he be casted as a female or as a male? If you say he will be casted as a female, is that not counter productive to what he wanted to do? If you then say that he will be able to choose which gender to play; does that not make it unfair for other actors and actresses? Tom Cruise would never be allowed to play Vanya but Elliot would be allowed to play Ethan Hunt??
If I remember correctly, Ellen was a lesbian married to a lesbian woman. Ellen is now Elliot which unironically makes him a straight white male. Is that correct?
Thanks for reading and once more, none of this was meant in negativity. It's just a fact of life that people WILL be confused. Trying to shut them down or downvote them does nothing but make things worse.
"I dont think anyone cares about Elliot" proceeds to write several paragraphs about their opinions on Elliot
Also, if the only thing you got out of Klaus' character was his relationship with Dave I really can't take you seriously. His character is incredibly nuanced and if you're going to bitch about his personality being primarily driven by a relationship, why don't you have a problem with how much of it is with Ben? You seem like you just generally have issues with people not adhering to heteronormative/cisgendered expectations. Grow up.
The queer/transphobia from your last paragraph holy shit...
