there's a ton of drop shipped items + illegitimately produced deskmats, etc (stores that run 100% on stolen designs from artists that post their work on twitter/insta). I think you're right, etsy itself does not care that the majority of the vendors are not handmaking/selling legitimate goods anymore. More on reddit.com

I dunno from what I've seen on Etsy, most of the keyboard stuff is the same stuff being sold on AliExpress but at a much higher price. I reckon they are the same sellers they just made accounts to sell on Etsy. Most keycap sets I have recognized were selling with 30 to 40% markups. And don't get me started on the Artisans. I saw one which is selling for $47 on AliExpress, but it's $100+ on Etsy with claims of being "locally handmade". Recognized a few others on that account too and they are definitely being mass produced in china. So how is it so successful and popular now? Well that's because Etsy had a great reputation (which they are now ruining) for being a trustworthy marketplace for quirky handmade goods. Now they have changed all sorts of T&C's, requirements and are taking huge cuts from sellers (even from their longstanding sellers who helped build Etsy's great reputation) and are allowing any given dropshipper to open up and start selling mass produced goods in the name of "more sales more profit" for Etsy. (Yes I know dropshippers were already selling on Etsy before, it was a popular "work from home scheme" being shared on social media, but not at this rate. Compared to a year or two ago now 90% of what I see in search results is dropshipped mass produced stuff) More on reddit.com

I bought this set of keycaps on Etsy for 40 dollars (https://www.etsy.com/listing/1215850232/black-and-yellow-theme-149-keycaps-set) and they arrived with no real issue. I'm wondering if they're a cloned set or something else. I found out that their main website is called masterkeycaps.com which I've never heard anyone talk about before (I also found the set on there for the same price). Does anyone know what the deal is with this I haven't seen this yellow set online anywhere besides ali express and other shady websites.

Honestly, I would trust aliexpress sellers and the site more than etsy, the place is basically filled with drop shippers acting like small businesses and they are not even subtle about it often marking up items by 2x or even 3x. The keycaps you got are xvx profile which is recently starting to be used more, I know epomaker is now using it under a different name for kits included on their boards. This profile of keycaps are produced by some OEM in china (not the website you found) and are being rebranded by other companies and resold for higher markups despite their big selling point being that they are affordable doubleshot pbt sets with wide compatibility. While I am sure you can get them for even cheaper via Taobao the average price for these sets seems to hover around 15-20 dollars when not marked up. If you like the profile and want to get another set in different colors I would get it from aliexpress or even Amazon where they are still overpriced but seem to hover around 25 dollars so still far less than the 40 paid.

Recently, i was shopping for a very specific set of keycaps, compatible with ISO Layout and featuring Japanese printing for Studying purposes.
So i found the following etsy:
Which look quite nice but seemed quite expensive for non-dual injection molded keycaps, so i looked on if i could find a cheaper price and found a listing on AliExpress for the same item, but only at 25% of the cost:

Whereas i honestly expected to buy a knockoff product, after further research and recieving the product myself, i now firmly believe that the two are in fact, the same product. Firstly, reviews on both platforms complain about the colouring, which is not gray, but more greenish. Secondly, both websites show pictures made by reviewers of the boxed product, both are in the same packaging even placed the same way. Seeing this, i went on and found quite a few other keycaps of which there are Etsy as well as Aliexpress listings with nothing but a price difference. Many even use the same imagery to advertise their products. Another reason i would argue for this is that there were multiple listings for the same keycaps on Etsy for the design i listed.
What i believe to be happening is that these sellers resell the Keycaps from Aliexpress, claiming to be the original creator of the design and then advertising and selling the product on Etsy for a hefty premium.
I think that this is quite sad as genuine artisans will obviously be drowned by these people who can, thanks to their hefty profit margins pay good money to etsy to advertise their products as opposed to someone more honest. Even more sadly i don‘t believe that Etsy has an interest to do anything about this as they presumably earn quite some money this way themselves.

Generally, a lot of goods are bought cheaper from Chinese wholesalers and resold for profit. If they’re in stock and delivered next day, with a local shop offering warranty that’s what you’re paying the extra for. That is quite a markup on that Etsy example though.
