Floor Division in Python - GeeksforGeeks
July 23, 2025 - we are performing floor division with math module between a float (7.5) and an integer (2). The result of dividing 7.5 by 2 is 3.75, but floor division truncates the fractional part, resulting in 3. ... The division operator / performs standard division, which can result in a floating-point number (a decimal). If both the dividend and divisor are integers, Python will perform integer division if the result is an integer; otherwise, it will produce a floating-point result.

Float arithmetics as fast (or even faster) than int
Well, to begin with, Python's integers aren't your ordinary int32 or int64, like they are in C, C++ or Rust. Python's integers can grow to hold more than 32 or 64 bits of data, which means that special processing is required for all operations on these "buffed-up" integers, as opposed to native ints, operations on which are built-in your CPU's circuitry. Python's floats, on the other hand, are mostly regular floats - the ones your FPU deals with. Now, to determine if Python's integers always require this special handling, one should read CPython's source. But a first approximation may be the following: compared to floats, Python's integers are actually more complex data structures (than basically a homogenous array of 4 or 8 bytes that supports carrying) that require additional overhead for all operations. People also ask

What is the difference between floor division (//) and regular division (/) in Python?
The key difference between floor division (//) and regular division (/) in Python is how they handle the result. Floor division returns the largest integer less than or equal to the division result, effectively truncating any decimal portion.

For example, 7 // 2 results in 3, whereas 7 / 2 results in 3.5. Use floor division when you need an integer result.

How do I do floor division with negative numbers?

When the dividend or divisor is negative (or both are), do the following:

  1. Perform standard division.

  2. Take the largest integer less than or equal to the result. For instance, the standard division of -7 by 5 will give -1.4, and the largest integer less than or equal to that is -2.

  3. The number -2 is the result of floor division.

You have to be careful here — the naive idea of "chopping off" the integer part of -1.4 will no longer work, as it will give -1 instead of -2.

What is the floor division of 9/2?

The floor division operation of 9 divided by 2 is 4.

The standard division of 9/2 is 4.5, which is then rounded down to 4. The floor division operation always yields integers smaller than or equal to the standard division results.
