Hey, architectural lighting designer here. You have some good lighting questions here so hopefully I can clear some things up for you. First of all any light that emits white light can be considered full spectrum. If you look at the spectrum of color temperatures for white light sources, you'll see that white light can have more blue in it (cooler) or more red in it (warmer). The ones you're looking at are tuned to a rather cool 5000K color temperature, meaning more blue light but all the other colors are still present. Why is that useful? Well humans react differently to those different color temperatures. Warmer color temperatures feel cozy and warm while cooler color temperatures can feel harsh and utilitarian. Apart from how these color temperatures feel to us, they also correspond to light from the sun that reaches Earth at different points throughout the day. When I was getting my masters in lighting design, the professors and designers emphasized how light effects human circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythm in all living things on Earth is based in the 24 hour light/dark cycle. Besides the day(light) and night(dark) portions of the cycle, the white light of the sun that reaches the Earth changes color temperature based on the sun's position relative to an observer. The sunlight at sunrise and sunset is much warmer than the sunlight at midday which is usually very cool on the CCT scale. In that sense, cooler color temperatures are more akin to daytime while warmer temperatures are more similar to the morning and evening. This is a main reason why higher color temperature light sources are marketed as increasing working efficiency, because our brains are hardwired to do work in the daytime when the sunlight is a very cool color temperature. From my own experience, I very much appreciate the cooler temperature light for while I'm working. It reminds me that there is still day light left and work to be done. I personally use and regularly specify 4000K light fixtures in office and industrial architecture projects. I typically don't go higher than 4000K but I will say that when it comes to designing spaces, the person who occupies the space the most is always right. There is a lot of preference involved too. I would also say don't buy grow lights for your working space. The main difference between grow bulbs and regular bulbs is the amount of light that they give out. full spectrum light color
"Full spectrum" is a very vague term bordering on marketing nonsense. However, it's really referring to CRI (color rendering index) rather than CCT (color temperature). An incandescent lamp, for example, has 100 (perfect) CRI and a "full spectrum" but usually has a temperature of 2500-3000 Kelvin. On the other hand, there are plenty of "daylight" bulbs with relatively low CRI, or incomplete "spectrum" to put it another way. More on reddit.com

Hi, all. I know this is a bit more for professional lighting but I'm not sure where else to post this, and doing my own research has been pretty inconclusive and exhausting so far. I was considering posting this on a wellness sub but figured I might get more technical and less... frankly, quacky answers here.

I've been looking at getting a full-spectrum bulb (ideally 5000k) for my basement office in the hopes of improving mood and focus. A few examples are:

  • NorbSmile

  • Koze

  • WhitePoplar

But I'm very confused about them in general regarding their actual effectiveness, and given the price of these bulbs compared to standard LEDs I'm pretty hesitant to pull the trigger without more information.

Basically, do they actually work for improving mood? Looking this up online has given me answers ranging from "Yes, absolutely" to "no evidence to suggest..." to "results inconclusive" so it's be nice to have a few more grounded testimonials. Obviously it may not work for everyone, but I'm willing to try it if it's not total bunk.

If you have had success with them, is there a specific brand that can be recommended, taking into account price, longevity, and availability in Canada.

Also, when I search for full-spectrum bulbs I get a lot of results for glow lamps like this, which seem a lot cheaper. Are these viable options? Are the human-oriented ones just more expensive to capitalize on depressed hipsters?

I'm also not super interested in the lamps to use for 30m/day, etc (that's a different can of worms); I'm mainly hoping to just swap out my bulb for a minor (at least) benefit.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any light you can shed help you can provide!

Seems like the main point in the question and answer is about color temperature; should there be consideration for the CRI? - the links appear to have CRI values above 96% - would you say that this is close enough to render full spectrum in white (regardless of CCT)? -oops, meant to reply to the first comment, not the OP
