I've used Dreamhost since 2006 and love them. But I'm a nerd-lite and coded my own websites. They have a pretty easy WordPress install that you can use to do things like you would do with Google Sites, I think. Looks like Dreamhost is having a sale for what they're calling WordPress Basic. They do offer a solid 90-day money-back guarantee, so you could try them with little risk. Not trying to sway you one way or another since I've never used Google Sites. Hope this helps. It really depends on what kind of site you want to build. If you want a blog-like site that has regular updates then Google Sites won't work. Same if you want lots of customisation.
However, for sites that are more information repositories, portfolios, businesses etc it's quite good and really easy to use.
If you'd like, you can take a look at the two sites I've made with it. Head to jmdworks.org to see my portfolio. Once there, click on "Collections" in the menu to open the second site.

I have been looking for a cheap alternative to our current website (using Wix) which is only co-owned by our organisation (a start up housing co-op with virtually no budget currently) as someone else set it up for us but didn't seem to fully understand what they were doing. We use Google docs and sheets for all our documentation and email so that makes sense but I have seen a lot of fundamental issues that have required people to take their sites elsewhere.

One comment mentioned paying $20 a year for domains. That’s way more than one person should be paying, unless you’re paying for multiple extensions (.com + .net, etc.) If you go this route, I cannot recommend enough that you buy your domain separately from your host provider (ex: dreamhost). For the following reasons: It’s cheaper (Namecheap if you catch a deal can be $8 or less the first year, and $12-13-ish every year after). You get WHOIS privacy protection included with that price. Most host providers charge a couple bucks extra for that. If you ever decide you don’t like dreamhost and want to move, your domain stays yours. You don’t have to go through the trouble of transferring the domain, which is both time and money saved. It’s an extra step that will save you a ton of headache down the line.
