Good flour grinder suggestions
Milling flour with a hand-crank mill is extremely slow and tedious. It takes so long, you can easily triple your effort for a single loaf of bread. I find the proposition completely untenable. Save up for the Mockmill. More on reddit.com
Do you recommend buying a grain mill for the home and if so, how difficult is it to find whole grains?
I’ve been grinding my own flour for 22 years now. Love the freshness of the flour. Here’s a list of my experience: grain lasts a LOT longer than already ground flour. freshness is unparalleled the KitchenAid Grain Mill attachment seriously sucks, avoid at all costs unless you want it for making cream of wheat (very coarse grind) my first mill was a KitchenMill, good but didn’t last as long as I thought it should’ve. second mill I got was the NutriMill Harvest Grain Mill, absolutely excellent and decently priced, watch for sales at big holidays. They seriously stand behind their products. Their customer service is outstanding. No I’m not getting paid for this, hahah. I buy grain in 25 lb bags from Amazon nowadays since grain is more scarce than it used to be in New Mexico. I buy Hard Red Spring Wheat for its higher gluten content for breads, and buy Soft White Winter Wheat for making tortillas. More on reddit.com
Home Grain Mill Recommendations
My wife has been baking bread almost daily for the past five years or so and wants a home grain mill for Christmas. It's pricey ($800 USD), but the Mockmill 200 Pro has a 12-year residential warranty: https://breadtopia.com/store/mockmill-professional-200-grain-mill/ More info: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeMilledFlour/comments/1839rn3/comment/kaowlmd/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 I've had mine for 3 years. I mostly do wheat flour, cornmeal, and rice flour with it. The mega-long warranty & improved internal hardware components will cover me for nearly the next decade of baking. My typical process is: Mill the flour (then either use it whole, sifted, or as a percentage with AP flour) Use the sourdough starter Use the overnight no-knead procedure Fresh bread every day for less than 10 minute's worth of effort to mill the flour, feed the sourdough starter, and create & bake the dough! Grain mill suggestions
The common ones are: -Victoria or similar, about $50, not great but maybe ok as your backup to your backup -wondermill hand crank, about $300, good quality but slow like the Victoria, small hopper, the cheapest workable mill in my opinion -country living, most common for serious bakers and those looking for a quality backup to electric mills or people who always use a hand mill. Takes several minutes to grind a pound of flour but isn’t difficult. Easy to disassemble, repair, and get spare parts for (right now at least), not too heavy, fine grind for bread baking, best for motorizing or connecting to a bicycle or treadle sewing machine base, expensive but not hugely so for a quality item at $500-700 depending on options, only comes in white color, offers more accessories than any others, offers a large auger option for corn and beans -diamant, super high quality, cast iron, nicely milled flour without sifting, just great but really, really expensive, around $1200, less common so parts are less common, biggest selling point besides quality is the iron fly wheel which keeps your momentum going and helps the grinding to be faster and easier, only comes in an unusual green color More on reddit.com

November 30, 2025 - Pros: Nutrimill released this grain mill with the simple goal of making fresh milled flour more accessible for everyone. They really nailed that by designing the cheapest grain mill on the market, coming in at under $200. And I’ve personally put this mill through the ringer, and it comes out swinging every time.

Hey guys 👋🏻,
I’m looking for a stone based flour grinder and I came across Mockmill but it is very expensive and way out of my budget.
I looked at other cheaper options but they are electric based and would generate a lot of heat ultimately affecting my flour.
Does anyone have other cheaper options to suggest? Thanks in advance

I bought Mockmill 200 for $300 from Mockmill. They have a sorta secret refurbished list. Got to call them and ask. But a Mockmill 200 for $300 totally refurbished all brand new with same 6 year warranty is the best deal you'll find.

January 17, 2023 - At that price, you’re getting ... Mill grinder. So again, mine works and I use it weekly - give or take. Adding 150g of wheat to the container leads to maybe 1 or 2 wheat berries that don’t grind perfectly, but other than that, it’s fine. Whereas my neighbor has a Kitchen Mill (currently $219 at Amazon) and has had great success with that. So I guess that’s my recommendation: if space is an issue and you already own a Vitamix, the dry grains container ...
