Is the Home Depot appliance protection plan worth a damn?
Sold appliances for Home Depot through 2012. (Don’t hold it against me.) I would buy it every time on refrigerators (the food loss benefit is worth it alone) and washing machines (just so many things can go wrong). Everything else is at your own discretion, though as a general rule the more there’s things involving complex electronics (as opposed to turn knob, gas burner turn on), the more likely I would be to buy the extended warranty on the item. How it used to work (and again saying YMMV, and that things may have changed since I was there,) and the reason you hear of people having hugely varied experiences is because they partner with local servicers for appliances- this caused huge headaches when the very first Direct Drive LG front load washing machines came out and had issues because nobody in my town of 70k people was trained to work on them. If you live in or near a major metro area, your access to service through the extended warranty will be fairly seamless. The quality of that service may be a little hit or miss based on the quality of appliance repair shops in your area, but also the guarantees the other folks mentioned about service within a certain number of days should help alleviate that. If you do run into issues with your extended service plan, make sure you’re documenting your contacts well, and just escalate things on up through Home Depot management if anything goes sideways. Your path would be Specialty Assistant Store Manager -> Store Manager -> District Manager -> Zone Services Manager -> Executive Email Carpet Bomb. Please know that the normal sales associates and department heads can’t really do shit for you beyond helping you set up your original service appointments. More on reddit.com

I loved my LG! Great design and it worked perfectly every day until it didn’t. This was before COVID but no one would repair it because parts are so expensive and take so long to get. So I replaced it with a Whirlpool but I miss that better designed LG every day! But I can’t replace a fridge every five years. More on reddit.com
