I’d go used. You can save way more than a few hundred Things fail on an inverse bell curve. So initial high failures due to assembly errors and not engineered errors. Low failures after that, if it were going to fail by now etc. High failures at the end: parts are wearing out This means you can potentially get more reliability from lightly used than you can with new. I have about 1200$ in Home Depot gift cards from a rewards program, and have been thinking about purchasing a riding lawn mower for my 2/3 acre lawn. Currently I think i'd like to stay around the 3.5k price point.
I see a lot of mixed reviews on pretty much all the mowers HD offers, so my question is whats your opinion on the product line at HD are any of them worth their salt? or should I spend my gift cards on something else at HD and purchase a mower from a specialty shop with more/different variety ?

Just mowing? You might put 60-70 hrs a year on it. At that rate it should last 10+ years. If you have slopes or planing on pulling stuff you might consider something a little more heavy duty.
