We have done 3 new build custom kitchens through Lowes. The custom cabinets from Lowes are built by American Woodmark. You have to get your design work done and then buy during one of the big sales that they have and leverage other discounts. We have been able to buy at 35-40% off of list for each project. I can't speak for Home Depot but during the couple of sales American Woodmark has per year is when you want to buy custom cabinets from Lowes(the cabinet design people know when those sales are and will tell you). I would imagine HD has a similar scenario. Lowes builds and delivers, then my trim guy installs them. The only negative is unboxing and checking for any damage within a specific window if your build is not ready for them.
