Getting a serial port cable to work
One of the reasons I always go with a RS-232 to USB adapter and then to a serial cable is due to some driver incompatibilities and other issues. The PL2303RA is often counterfeited and will cause some issues with drivers in Unix based stuff as well as Windows. At this moment in time, the only PL2303 cables I trust are the ones from TrippLite and IOGear and I only use the official drivers from those companies as well. That being said, it is a standard rollover (i.e. Cisco Blue cable) port on the RB4011. More on reddit.com

r/ccna on Reddit: How do Cisco routers connect to the internet? Are serial ports still used?
May 15, 2020 -

I just started the CCNA coursework and I'm somewhat confused regarding the port on a router. I understand the ethernet ports are used to connect switches or host devices, but it seems like most WIC expansion slots use serial ports, which I thought were a thing of the past. Are serial ports still used? How do routers themselves connect to the internet? What are the serial ports used for?
