Can you find the range of a given function without drawing a graph?
For anything other that straight lines (ie quadratics), you cannot assume that a function hits the maximum or minimum at the limits of the domain. Draw any arbitrary curve (going up and down). Now draw two vertical lines to show the domain. Can you see that there is no reason to believe that the range is determined by the domain end points? It is possible to do this without a graph? Yes, but that might require something like calculus for a complicated function. Most students would simply sketch one just to remind themselves what kind of function they are dealing with. How to find Range of function
One way to do it is by inverting the function (swap x and y, then solve for y). The domain of the inverted function will be the range of the original function. Ex: y = x2 + 3, find domain and range This function doesn’t have anywhere where you would be dividing by 0 or taking the square root of a negative, so the domain is (-inf, inf) To find range, first invert function x = y2 + 3 => y2 = x - 3 => y = sqrt(x - 3) The range will be the domain of this inverted function. For x<3, you would be taking the square root of a negative, so the domain of the inverted function is [3, inf). That is the range of the original function. More on reddit.com

How to find the IP range to test?
I get the spirit of this request, but I want to add that. No one blocks the range of a "company or organization" by IP address at the firewall. If you're engaged in a pen test, you need to have a range identified for you so you can stay legal. You can and should try to discover what you can, especially since knowing a domain versus the IP address can get you further, but you should not even have a chance to go off reservation and start testing some other entity on accident. This sounds like you want to attack a company. More on reddit.com

PLEASE HELP! How do I find the range of any function algebraically (without having to graph the given functions)?
Generally this is difficult to do; if you're in Calculus, there is an aid for piecewise-differentiable functions called a derivative test , but finding where the derivatives equal zero is itself difficult in general. More on reddit.com

No. Because the range formula subtracts the lowest number from the highest number, the range is always zero or a positive number.

  1. f(x) = x-2, x ≤ 3

Then,

f(x) ≤ f(3)

f(x) ≤ 3-2

f(x) ≤ 1

It leads to the correct answer.

2. g(x) = 2x², -3 ≤ x ≤ 1

Then,

g(-3) ≤ g(x) ≤ g(1)

2(-3)² ≤ g(x) ≤ 2(1)²

18 ≤ g(x) ≤ 2

In this case, of course, it makes little sense (at least to me). Of course, by drawing a graph, you easily get the correct answer, 0 ≤ g(x) ≤ 18.

I have two questions:

  1. Why does this not work? What's really going on?

  2. Is it possible to do without drawing a graph? How?

r/learnmath on Reddit: How to find Range of function
December 8, 2020 -

Hey so, I jumped a math class and I have a big test coming. I know how to find the domain of a function without a graph, but how do you find the range? The range of a function without a graph, I mean. They discussed it in the class before this one but I wasn't there and the notes aren't telling me much. If there isn't a specific way, are there any tips or tricks? Specifically quadratic functions or functions with square roots in them? My teacher in his notes just replaces the radicand or any other number in a parentheses like thing with [0, infinity)
