I wanted to get the Songesand bed frame in white, but it is out of stock in most of my local stores and the closest one is in SD which is a pretty far drive. I'm thinking of getting the Hemnes frame in white instead, but all the bad reviews are scaring me. Anyone have experience with Hemnes bed frames?
So I am in the middle of packing for a move. The landlord is letting me have the bed frame I was using. He didn’t have instructions but the frame has Hemnes on it so I found the PDF of the Assembly instructions.
I feel so frustrated. Is Ikea furniture hard to disassemble? I don’t know why I can’t figure this out. I’m looking at the instructions PDF but I can’t figure it out. I feel close to just giving up and leaving it for trash. 😂
And some parts look different in the pictures then my bed. But overall it is my bed plus I did double-check that Hemnes is the mode name on the frame. There are 4 screws with nuts on them, holding the sides of the frame to the headboard and foot of the bed. But they are in these weird little circle openings that I can’t fit a socket wrench in to remove the nut. And I definitely can’t fit a drill or screwdriver in there either.
This post probably doesn’t make sense but I am at my wit’s end. 😂 Are these frames not meant to be taken apart?
I'm writing this post because I searched through reddit a bunch before buying the bed to see what other people had done and recommended. I think my bed is a bit atypical but it works great for me and is exactly what I wanted. Since it's not a standard build I wanted to put it out there. If anyone else has a unique modification to a Hemnes bed, feel free to share it here!
My requirements: I wanted a bed with a headboard that wasn't too tall (needed to fit under a large art piece on my wall) and a footboard that wouldn't be taller than the mattress level. I'm fairly tall so I need the ability to hang my feet off the edge. I also wanted a bed with a mattress level that was fairly high off the ground.
My setup: I went with the queen size hems model since it had all the qualities I was looking for and had a nice look to it. Instead of slats, I decided to use a box spring. This was something that I had looked up a lot before purchasing. However, I decided to get a shorter box spring (my mattress is not from IKEA and came with the option of a regular box spring or a reduced profile box spring and I got the latter, hoping that the 3 levels for the railing on the Hemnes bed could produce enough variance if I needed more/less height). I put the rails on the middle option, which puts the box spring almost flush with the side support beams. With my mattress on top, it's high enough off the ground (mattress level is even with the Hemnes night stand 26" I think) to be above the footboard but not too high on the head board.
The result: I absolutely love it! It's still only a few days old but this was exactly what I wanted. Here's how it all looks! And here's a messier photo where you can see the footboard. The bed is very sturdy and I didn't have any problems with assembly.
A note on delivery: I read a lot of horror stories about deliveries. My nearest IKEA is 3 hours away and I don't have a large vehicle to transport items so I was stuck doing delivery. I looked about a month ago and saw that shipping had gone from $350 to $49 so I jumped on that option. My initial delivery date was April 5th (I'm writing this post April 2nd). They contacted me last Tuesday saying that my 4 hour delivery window was being scheduled for Thursday 2-6 pm. I confirmed that I would be there at that time. Right in the middle of the window (~4pm) the delivery truck showed up (after an automated call with a 15 minute warning) and they quickly unloaded and moved everything into my room (Markus chair, Hemnes night stand, bed and under-the-bed drawers), and I was putting together the night stand by 4:15. So it's not all terrible and this was overall a really good experience!
tldr: put a low-profile box spring - no slats - on my queen Hemnes to get the height that I needed. Worked great. Delivery was smooth.
Hopefully this post is useful to someone searching for thoughts on a Hemnes bed in the future!
edit: Forgot to say that I'm in the US, so I was using the US IKEA site.
Hi!
As the title says, my current hemnes bed frame makes a lot of noise so needs a replacement. I been looking removed then buying headboard.
Do you have any better suggestion?
Thanks!
