r/Mattress on Reddit: Innerspring vs. pocket coil
July 6, 2025 -
Those who’ve bought both, what’s your opinion/preference? Innerspring is cheaper to buy (but harder to ship) and gives more bounce and uniform support, but has “motion transfer.” Pocket coil is easier to ship and gives “motion isolation” and costs more (in stores). They’ve both been around a long time, with pocket coil having the name “Marshall coil” originally. Regarding reliability, I’m not sure, but in reviews it seems L&P pocket coils fail quite a bit while you hardly ever hear about a failed innerspring (just the foam above it). Thoughts?

It really comes down to the quality of steel when you’re measuring durability. Most innersprings are lower priced mattresses and going to use less costly materials.

It's been years since I've seen a spring break or poke out of a mattress but every one I've seen was an old school innerspring. Also, the old ones not so uncommonly could have the wires rubbing through the corners of the mattress over time. You generally don't have those issues with pocketed coils. I'd also be very interested to see numbers on how many of those pocketed coils systems you mention fail often, are in roll packed beds vs non roll packed. Speaking of which,I'm not sure what you mean by failing. How exactly are they failing?

Hi Phoenix, Until 2 years ago, I never owned anything but an old-school innerspring mattress with traditional non-pocketed coils. Most of that time was spent on a relatively firm (cushion firm) Sealy Posturpedic which was great for 8+ years until the very minimal amount of padding compressed ... Are pocket coil mattresses good for you?
Pocket coil mattresses can be a good option for many people, particularly those who prefer a mattress with more bounce and support. The individual coils in pocket coil mattresses conform to the body's shape, offering customized support and relieving pressure points, which can contribute to better sleep quality. The pocketed coils also isolate motion better than traditional open springs.
However, personal preferences, such as firmness level and sleep position, should also be considered when determining if a pocket coil mattress is the right choice for you.

Do more pocket coils make a better mattress?
While the number of pocket coils in a mattress can affect its overall support and durability, it's not the sole factor determining the mattress's quality. Other factors, such as the gauge of the coils, the quality of materials used in the comfort layers, and the mattress's overall construction, also play crucial roles in determining how well the mattress performs.
Therefore, while more pocket coils may contribute to better support and responsiveness, it's essential to consider the mattress's overall design and construction.

Can you flip a pocket coil mattress?
Whether you can flip a pocket coil mattress depends on its design. Many modern pocket coil mattresses are designed to be one-sided and should not be flipped. Flipping such mattresses could result in discomfort and uneven wear.
However, some pocket coil mattresses may be designed to be flippable, typically with the same comfort layers on both sides.

Innerspring vs Pocketspring Mattress | Tasman Eco – Seena
October 9, 2022 - The minimum amount of pocket springs to look out for is 1,000 in a king size mattress and you should avoid mattresses with more than 3,000 springs as these are micro springs and will reduce the quality of support significantly. Innerspring mattresses are made of mostly metal coils, all of the coils/springs are connected in a single unit, meaning that all of the springs move together here.
