Hello,
I've been searching for the sensor size, pixel pitch, and other related specs of my iphone 11's main camera for a long while. I've stumbled upon many places that gave inconsistent values, and are hoping to get some clarity on some terms.
From this site https://capturetheatlas.com/camera-sensor-size/, they said the sensor size is 6.17x4.55mm. Diag: 7.666mm.
While in this post https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/comments/dadfas/gate_dimensions_of_individual_iphone_11_pro/, the OP found 5.88x4.42mm from EXIFdata. The primary camera should be the same on both the Pro and normal. So the Diag:7.356mm.
And if I'm understanding the following statement correctly from https://www.dxomark.com/apple-iphone-11-camera-review/, "Primary: 12MP 1/2.55-inch sensor with 1.4µm pixels and 26mm f/1.8-aperture lens", then the diagonal of the sensor size is 1/2.55-inches or 9.906mm.
So yeah as one can see, there's a lot of confusing info out there, and I'm not sure what to trust. But I wish to at least get some clarifications for now. Please let me know if I have the following terms correctly understood?
12MP refers to total # of pixels on the camera sensor
1/2.55-inch refers to the diagonal length of the camera sensor
1.4µm pixels refers to the pixel pitch or dot pitch
26mm is the focal length in 35mm equivalent
f/1.8-aperture lens refers to the size of the aperture
I’m going to need to replace my iPhone 11 soonish and iPhone 16 seems like a common sense choice (I like to keep a phone for as long as possible so hopefully I keep my iPhone 16 until I replace it with the iPhone 21). My main areas of interest in general is battery life and camera. Now obviously I’ve seen the specs but would love to get some real world opinions on how much better the camera on the 16 actually is?
