If you like a body-conforming feel then you’ll prefer a gel memory foam mattress. But if you like firmer support, then you may like a spring mattress. Both the beds have a cooling effect and are good for hot sleepers. A gel memory foam mattress may be more expensive than regular spring mattresses.

Do gel memory foam mattresses last longer than spring mattresses?
The answer to this question depends on the quality of your bed. A good quality spring mattress usually lasts 7 to 10 years. Cheaper spring mattresses don’t last long because they contain inferior quality coils which can lead to sagging. Gel memory foam mattresses can last up to 10 years.

r/Mattress on Reddit: Major lower back pain after 12 months with memory foam mattress
April 14, 2019 -
I have herniated discs and had surgery for them over a decade ago. I had the same sealy box spring mattress with a topper for 9 years with no problems. I moved to a well-reviewed memory foam mattress over a year ago (Bed In A Box) and it was insanely comfortable for a year and then destroyed my back in the last 6 months.
I hate the idea of moving away from this bed so soon (since I got 9 years out of my old one) and it feels like a waste of money, but I’m positive it’s the bed giving me pain. When I stay at hotels I’m totally fine, but at home I can barely walk in the morning.
Any recommendations for a mattress that’s comfortable but will support my back? Any tips with the guilt of splitting with a mattress that’s barely used?

Loving my purple 2, it fixed my back pain. I have arthritis in my lower back. No pain in the morning.

You might also look for a zoned support system. These typically provide additional support in the center third of the mattress to prevent your low back from sinking too much.
