Planning on going to Universal tomorrow with 4 young children (ages 4-7.) Are the express passes worth it? Or do you think the lines won’t be too crazy tomorrow (November 11.) thanks!

I used to buy normal admission until one day I visited the park later in the afternoon. A couple was leaving the park and stopped me and my girl and asked us if we wanted their express unlimited lanyards. Of course we said yes. After experiencing that day at the park I vowed to never go again without buying express passes. It can completely change your experience. Some rides like Studio Tour, Jurassic World, The Mummy, Harry Potter. The express pass can be the difference between 120min standing in line, or walking straight past hundreds of people right to the front. Sure there are probably exceptions. I’m sure season pass holders that visit more frequently have experienced days where the lines are just short or the occupancy is lower. But if you’re someone like me who visits maybe once a year, and fly there from outside Los Angeles or even out of state, I don’t think it’s worth chancing it. Standing in line for hours personally just bums me out, and in poor weather conditions, hot or cold, can drain me of my energy. I think Universal Express pass might currently be the most efficient fast pass of any theme park. It can be purchased as a version of the admission ticket, not separately from a 3rd party like Six Flags. Disney Genie plus was terrible, forcing you to be on your phone all day strategically trying to reserve rides and fill in the time between. Universal Express is simple and effective. You buy it, you use the Express lanes and go to the front. In conclusion, I say it’s worth every penny.

Will be traveling to Universal Studios or Island of adventures + Epic for two days the first week of September. We have a place to stay which will be cheaper than staying at a premier Universal hotel UNLESS we are buying 5 Express passes for each day for our family...

Question: Epic has no express passes so are the ques short enough to skip the passes and get the cheaper hotel or better to stay at a premier Universal and get the "free" express pass for our non-Epic day?

Epic does have Express Passes, but they’re only for one-time use per ride. I'm not entirely sure if they’re still limiting Express Pass use on certain rides like the Donkey Kong ride or Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. When I purchased mine for July, it did mention that some rides were excluded but when I checked again recently, it didn’t say that anymore, sooo... not sure what’s up with that. Anyway, I ended up spending around $1k for the passes, and I have my reasons. I have a cousin visiting the U.S. for the first time, and I really want them to experience the entire park in a day. I also booked a room at one of the Premier Hotels using a discount. What I did was book just a single night at one of the hotels because you get the Express Pass perks for both the full day of check-in and check-out. So here's the plan: Day 1: Universal Studios Florida - Early Admission & Unlimited Express - During Check in Day Day 2: Islands of Adventure - Early Admission & Unlimited Express - During Check out Day Day 3: Epic Universe - Seprate Express Pass Purchase That way, we can take full advantage of the events and attractions without spending the whole day waiting in lines. Just to give you an idea do you really need to stay at a Premier Universal hotel for the whole trip? Probably not. If all you're after are the perks, you can just do what I did: book a ghost room at the cheapest Premier hotel for one night, pick up your key/pass that morning, and use the perks throughout check-in and check-out days. Then, find a cheaper place to stay for the rest of your trip. (Or just find a place to go back and sleep and not sleep at the hotel premier hotel) Also (someone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong I'm not a local), but September is still considered a busy season. It’s more around November when the crowds start to thin out. So overall, if your family is okay with waiting in lines and you know you’ll be coming back to Universal again in the future, then maybe you don’t need the Express Passes. But if you’re not planning to return anytime soon, and waiting in long lines is going to be an issue, then following a plan like the one I outlined above could be your best bet! Have fun at Epic can’t wait to go myself in July!

Orlando Informer provides a in depth blog all about Express Pass . There is also a link in the side bar, but we know getting there from mobile can be a pain, so here is a convenient link for you! *Updated as of February 2024 In short summary, there are two types of EP. Basic EP and Unlimited EP. Basic lets you into the EP line once, per ride, per day. Unlimited is exactly that. Express Pass is an add on to an entry ticket. You cannot get into the park with only an EP. If you stay at one of these hotels: Royal Pacific, Hard Rock, or Portofino Bay, you receive Unlimited EP as a perk of staying at the hotel. This includes the day you check in and the day you check out. Meaning, if you stay one night, you receive two days of EP. You can check into your hotel as early as 7am and receive your room keys which double as your Express Pass. Your room will not be ready, but guest services will hold your luggage while you're enjoying the parks and they will text you when your room is ready. You cannot share an EP. Many of the rides at USF have engaged a bio-metric system that uses a type of facial recognition to verify pass holders. You do not have to purchase EP to enjoy the parks. You can wait until you're inside the parks to determine if EP is needed for you and purchase them at kiosks inside the parks. You do NOT have to stand in the long lines at the front of the parks to buy Express add on There are several kiosks inside each park and they generally have very small to no lines, at all. You can also ask about discounted prices after specific times of the day (such as a discount after 4pm) If you know you want EP, purchase online before you arrive. EP Prices only increase as there is more demand. Optioning to purchase Express Pass may be cheaper the earlier you buy. Not every ride or attraction has a EP lane (ahem, HAGRIDS), but most do. I'm going in late January, and I'm spending a day by myself, and a day with family at the park. I'm a coaster enthusiast, and was wondering if the express pass unlimited was worth it? What kind of time do you save, especially on like velocicoaster?

I'd never go to universal without express. That being said for 2+ people it's almost always cheaper to stay at a premier resort for 1 night to get 2 days of express pass included. So get the calculator out.

My partner and I spent this past Thursday at Epic Universe and managed to ride every major ride without using Express Passes. We even got on Stardust Racers twice. The longest standby line we hit was Minecart Madness at around 90 minutes. Everything else was shorter, but it all depends on time of day, and there were definitely long wait times (120+) at a majority of the rides all day. We kept a close eye on the app and set alerts for when wait times dropped below a certain threshold. That strategy really paid off and helped us move through the park efficiently, and perhaps luck was on our side as well. Instead of starting with Battle at the Ministry, which most people seemed to rush toward first thing in the morning, we headed to Super Mario World. Later in the evening, around 7 PM, we circled back to Battle and got in line when the posted wait was 75 minutes. It felt shorter than that, though. Whether Express Passes are worth it depends on your priorities and how you like to experience the parks. For us, they wouldn’t have added much value. We had an amazing time without them and felt like we made the most of our day.

If you want to ride absolutely everything (and possibly see the shows), then I'd say it is definitely necessary. While wait times fluctuate throughout any given day, and obviously vary day-to-day, if you add up all of the current wait times in the park, it comes to over 11 hours. On a day where the park is only open for 12. Add in walking time, eating time, miscellaneous time, and you can see that *something* would have to break. You'd either have to skip something, or you'd have to have a way (like Express) to cut down the waits.

r/UniversalOrlando on Reddit: Express passes worth 400$ more?
April 10, 2024 -

My girlfriend and I are going to universal Orlando next week Tuesday-Wednesday. It’s her first time ever and my first time in 15 years. I’ve read that around that time is usually not very busy because kids back to school and weather sucks, so as of now we are planning to stay on-site at a value resort for the night. The thing is it’s only gonna end up costing me an extra 400$ to get a premier room which would give us express pass for both days. I don’t want us to feel rushed since we’re only there for 2 days, is it worth the extra 400 to upgrade and get the passes?

Edit: Thanks for the responses everyone, they were all very helpful. We decided to upgrade to royal pacific for the night, super excited!

October 25, 2024 -

Hi, my wife and I will be in Orlando during the second week of December and are considering whether it’s worth purchasing Express Passes for Universal Studios Orlando - Islands of Adventure. We’re planning to visit on a weekday, not the weekend. Do you think the $120+ per person cost is justified?

None of us can answer that for you. It cuts the wait times down by a lot. Nobody here knows your financial situation or how much time you want to spend in the park or how you prefer to spend your time. Look at all the rides you want to do, when you plan to arrive and leave, and how much the passes will cost…and think to yourself if it’s worth that cost for cutting 50-80% off the wait times.

I can’t quite tell if you are saying that you’re visiting the park for a week of weekdays or just one weekday while you’re in Orlando. If you’re staying for the week,In my opinion, no. I stayed the second week of November 2023 Saturday thru Thursday - 5 days 2 parks. We actually went to the park the day we arrived so it was more like 4 1/3 days (flight was delayed) and we had enough time to do everything we wanted at least twice over, if not more. We were almost “bored” by the last night and ended up just wandering the parks and enjoying the lights and scenery. We also spent a half a day exploring some of the hotels and taking the water taxi or walking paths, and spending some time at the pool. We did utilize Early Park Access 4 of the days. We did wait in lines most days, the worst being Hagrids. But that was about 90 min and you can’t use the Express Pass anyway. We also did not, of course, have Epic Universe to consider. If you’re visiting both parks just that one day, I would would go ahead and purchase it - it doesn’t leave a lot of time for leisure or re-riding your favorites if you’re in line half of the day or trying to play strategy. Even if you visit and have low wait times, I’d rather have the back up. Obviously, your milage may vary but if I were in your shoes that is what I would do

We are going to universal the first week of November. My first question is, are the fast passes worth it? Are the wait times still just as long with the fast passes? I assume it will still be super busy since we will be there during HHN. I really want to do all the Harry Potter stuff, so should we hit that as soon as the park opens? I haven’t been to Universal since I was around 10. Now I’m 33 and we are taking our 12 year old and a 1 year old. Obviously 1 year old won’t be able to ride anything so grandma is coming with us and we will alternate. Super excited to go and I think we may do 1 night of HHN. We are taking our son to a haunted house before we go to be sure he’s up for it. He’s super pumped as well!

Edit: has anyone paid extra for the VIP experience? Was it worth it? Or should we just do the fast passes and not pay extra for the vip experience?

Hi guys!

My boyfriend and I are celebrating our 6 year anniversary and are looking into booking a last minute trip to Universal Studios Hollywood. We're coming in from Toronto, Canada.

We are planning on going in 2 weeks (Jan 21 + Jan 22). We're thinking of buying a 2 day admission ticket as well as an express pass. Do you think the express pass is worth it? I don't know how busy it is around this time (after the holidays). We will be going on a weekday. If we get the express ticket, do we even need a second day at Universal? Let me know your thoughts!

Oh also, if you have any suggestions of where we can stay (hotel wise) that's nearby or a cheap Uber ride away that would be great.

My husband and I planned a trip to Universal Orlando 3 parks. I am wondering if its worth it to get the unlimited express ride passes, its almost 1800.00 for all 5 of us for 2 days for just the express passes. I started looking around and can get Discovery Cove passes and all of us can swim with Dolphins,go snorkeling food and beverages are included for the day plus so much more for the same price. I want to know if express passes are really worth it our trip is planned 9/18 - 9/25. We have our Universal tickets for Tues, Weds,Thurs

Thanks for any advice

Going to universal studios hollywood in a week and I already bought our express tickets. I just learned that there is an unlimited express that lets you skip the line/go to the shorter line as many times as you want for each ride vs the regular express tickets that only lets you do it once for each ride. What I’m asking is, are there many (if any) rides that are so cool/fun that you’d want to ride it more than once, making it worth it for me to upgrade to the unlimited express? I’m a first timer. Realistically, I don’t see my husband & I wanting to ride a ride more than once but again I’ve never been so I’m not sure how dope the rides are to even know if we’d want to do it more than once. It’s only $40 each person to upgrade, but if the rides aren’t worthy of going on more than once then it’s not necessary to spend the extra 80 bucks. Thanks in advance!

My family and I are planning on going to Epic Universe in a couple weeks. I’m very excited. However, the wait times I’ve been seeing recently (especially the Mario Kart ride) have been insane. My dad does not handle long waits well (he gets pissed 😂). But the Express Passes are really expensive and don’t include all of the rides. We’re only going to be able to visit on one day. Are they worth the high price? Do they save that much time?

If you are a completionist and need to experience everything in the park, it will be useful. But you will be paying Express Pass unlimited prices for once per ride, with three rides not available on EP. Here is what I remember on a Friday. We didn't start using our EP until about 1PM because Donkey Kong was such frustration as it broke down while in line. Stardust Racers: 55 posted, 40 EP (it was running at reduced capacity). After Ministry of Magic broke down they gave us an Express Pass. We used it to ride Stardust again and it was a posted 65 minute wait and we waited about 40 again. Monsters Unchained: 15 minute posted. EP was walk on to merge point, but lockers slow you down. We rode it again right after and the posted wait was down to 10 minutes. I don't think EP did anything for us here. Mario Kart: 90 standby, 20-25 EP Yoshi: 60 standby, 5 min EP Fyre Drill: 120 standby, 25-30 EP Hiccup: 90 standby, 20 EP Constellation Carousel: this was our last ride and it was a walk on standby. There was no reason to use EP. Curse of the Werewolf: 60 standby, 15 EP. For the rides not on EP, we waited 125 minutes for DK, 15 mins for Dragon Racers (got in after it reopened due to lightning), and 45 for Ministry (got in line at 9AM). Could not use it for Untrainable Dragon EP seating. The shows were cancelled. Did not get around to the Harry Potter show. It was pricey and I was glad I did EP because I wanted to experience every ride. However when I go to EU again in February, we are not getting Express Pass because we will skip a lot of the lesser rides unless they happen to have short waits. Bottom line: I felt EP helped the most on rides I would have felt good about skipping anyway. On our next visit we want to explore more and get multiple rides on Monsters, Ministry and Stardust. Also we have Mario Kart in Universal Hollywood nearby. If you don't get EP, prioritize those three.

I’m an enthusiast who’s spent far too much of my adult life waiting in line for rides. I’ve haven’t been to Epic yet, and I plan to visit during a slower period. Even then I wouldn’t go without Express Pass. If you can afford it then buy it, especially if you only have one day. That time you spend waiting in line could be spent enjoying food in air conditioning or exploring the different lands. And if you are waiting for hours, it could be without shade in 100 degree weather plus humidity. I could be wrong. You may have a wonderful time without Express Pass and I’m sure others have, but personally I wouldn’t risk it.

Hello, folks!
Me, my partner and two friends are going to Japan this November and we bought our tickets to the Universal Studios Japan park at November 11th, a Monday. We are really excited for it and started searching about it and saw many recommendations to get the Express Pass tickets to avoid wasting too much time in lines.
But the price is pretty high, almost double the entry ticket, do you think it is worth considering we're going on a Monday? Or should we expect it to be packed and as such it is essential for having a nice experience?
