I slept on futons in Japan and then America for about 3 years. What makes a futon work is the floor it sits on. In Japan it's springy tatami mats. When I had a vaulted wood floor under mine in America, it was great. When I had it on carpet over concrete, it was unusable. You will also need to air out the futon not infrequently, which could be an issue depending on your space. Just fyi. I would not go back to a futon. But I am going to get a thick American style futon mattress to have in the nursery for when my toddler wants to snuggle to sleep, once I move my gel mattress off the floor of the nursery and back to my own room. Have you slept on a futon before? I would say they are definitely not for everyone. An alternate idea, which is less aesthetically pleasing (unless you fancy it up with making yourself a frame attached to the wall etc) is to use a regular mattress on the floor (I use a single IKEA foam mattress) and of a day time I roll up my duvet/pillow in the sheet and store it, and flip the mattress up against the wall. No need for airing outside etc More on reddit.com

Does anyone know where in Canada can I buy an authentic Shikibuton (Japanese futon) and tatami mat? Amazon sells knock offs, and all the companies in the US do not seem to ship to Canada. :(

We tried sleep training and decided it wasn't for us (but still zero judgement for those who do it, and I'm not willing to argue with anyone here about it) so we will be continuing to co-sleep.
Because of this, our queen bed isn't going to work for our family anymore. My husband wants to buy a king, but I'm curious about a Japanese floor mattress instead. He said he could be game. I like the idea of being able to roll it up and put it away during the day and have more space for *activities* during the day
I also like that they're available made of more natural materials and much less expensive than a king sized bed.
Anyway, anyone have experience with this? Brands you like, how was the lifestyle change etc?

We have two of these for sleepovers. I slept on them a few times. It was not a great experience. Even doubling them up was no help. My hips and back were crying for a regular bed after.
