If you've manually installed Oracle Java it doesn't show up in the Dash (as far as I know).

  1. Open a terminal
  2. Execute the following command:

    /usr/bin/jdk1.8.0_05/bin/ControlPanel

Replace /usr/bin/jdk1.8.0_05 by the path of your Java installation.

Nvidia Control panel doesn't see minecraft.exe.
Click Add new programs (or something similar). It will show you last opened apps. Look for Java executive (yes, you need this, not minecraft.exe) there and add it. If it won't be there, you'll have to choose Choose from directory (or similar) and manually go to Java executive. More on reddit.com

Java Control Panel
Microsoft Windows will show all JREs installed on a computer. The Java Control Panel finds the JREs by looking in the registry. On Solaris, Linux, or Mac OS X, the situation is different. There is no registry so there is no easy way to find the JREs that a user may have installed.

6.4. By default, Java allows itself to use a crazy maximum amount of disk space for the cache (what were the developers smoking?). You can limit that as follows: Call up the Java Control Panel as follows (in each user account): Launch a terminal window. (You can launch a terminal window like this: *Click*) Copy/paste into the terminal: /opt/java/64/jre1.8.0_431/bin/ControlPanel Press Enter.

where can I find the java "control panel"? - Kubuntu Forums
Googling this error revealed that the latest Java update has apparently tightened up security, and a lot of apps have been broken by it. The only solution, apart from waiting for app devs to fix their apps, is to add a "java security exception", which you can apparently do through something called the "control panel".
