It is good to see Cub going to a fabricated deck. Their stamped one was a piece of junk. but I would like to see one out in the field a few more years before I was to spend money. Hello i am new here, have another question again to ask. We need it to mow about 2 acres of mostly flat pasture once a week for about 8-9 months in a year. These two appear to be in our budget and have similiar price range.

I'm more partial to the Deeres, though the XT you are looking at is a good ride. The redesign over the old LTs is noticeably better. You'll find that even though the XT touts a FAB deck, the blades seem lighter duty and are costly- just like the blade spindle . Deck belts are pricey too. The Easy Change on the Deere is ridiculous. But it can easily have an oil drain installed and a regular Briggs or Deere oil filter. The engines are pretty much a wash between the two. It may come down to what is easiest for you to get service on and what just feels better to you.

I use to work at a John Deere/Exmark dealership at one time as well as a Cub Cadet/Husqvarna/Gravley dealership at another time and to be completely honest with you the major difference between them are the plastics on them. The powertrain/ drivetrain between the two of them are exactly the same ... They will be very similar mowers made by the same company, MTD.

The S140 is one of their higher end big box models, built in a different factory from the dealer models, but they're still good mowers. If you compare detailed specs, you will see that both manufacturers use similar engines and transmissions in different models. I think the John Deere is probably of a higher quality than Cub Cadet but I don't particularly care for B&S engines. The four models I'm considering all have V-Twin engines but I believe John Deere has B&S make engines for them that are either better or stronger than the standard B&S engines. I've always preferred Kohler over B&S. The Troy-Bilt riding mower I had in the nineties had a Kohler engine and I was quite impressed with both the mower and the engine.

August 10, 2022 - Both have a 48" deck, but the SST is higher up than entry level and the most noticeable thing is how much better the cut is. My third lawn tractor is a 1990 Cub Cadet 2182. Now, that's a real lawn tractor. It was probably fairly close to king of the mountain for homeowner grade mowers back in the day and will out perform either one of my JD's, even when they were new.
