ISO - Image of the installer. You boot into the ISO which will allow you to run the setup program to install Kali. Prebuilt VM - Exactly that. A prebuilt virtual machine that has already been configured. You simply "double click" on the virtual disk and it will automatically boot up. Regardless of which one you pick, neither are more or less secure than the other. Answer from Drivingmecrazeh on reddit.com

Should I install Kali on a virtualbox or should I directly install it as a dualboot?
Depends on your intent I suppose. Naturally, a direct install would run faster than a VM but if you actually require safety then I believe the generally accepted mentality is to not install it at all but to run it live so that every time you boot it you get a clean run. That way you can't get hacked on it and have malware/rootkits or whatever installed. Personally, I like ParrotOS running live mode inside a VM just for the added security of the host being protected as well. More on reddit.com

September 22, 2022 -
Hello, I'm starting my journey into virtualization and came across two options on the Kali Linux website.
1st is [Installer Image] .ISO file
2nd is [Prebuilt Virtual Machine] 7z file
These are the two files that appear on top after clicking download on the Kali Linux home page.
What is the difference between the two file types?
Is one better or more secure than the other?

The second is easier. It'll be a .vdi file, i.e. a virtual disk. This means there's little to no setup involved. It does differ between VirtualBox and VMWare though, so down the right one.

May 21, 2021 - The main difference between OVA and ISO is that OVA will import Kali into VirtualBox instead of installing it as if we were inserting a CD version of Kali. This is a very simple way of getting Kali up and running without having to configure a lot of settings, and it will work just fine for this course. First, we’ll want to download Kali at this URL.

December 22, 2025 - Importing the Kali VirtualBox image is very straightforward. We first need to extract the VirtualBox image: kali@kali:~$ 7z x kali-linux-2025.4-virtualbox-amd64.7z [...] kali@kali:~$ If we are using Windows we can instead use the official 7z app. We then launch VirtualBox: From here we will be wanting to select ‘Add’. We then navigate to the location our VM is downloaded and find the .vbox file:
