A lawn is a yard of grass. Some yards are lawns, but others are not. A garden is a plot of land where you are intentionally planting and cultivating either edible plants or decorative plants.

If you say "lawn" i will picture an expanse of grass while "yard" would just be whatever outdoor space you have inclusive of any patios, paths, gardens, rock features, whatever. And yes this means your yard can contain a lawn but not the other way around.
