I’ve always had a very high opinion of La-Z-boy sofas and recliners because as a kid my uncle had one and I always thought it was the best couch ever, so comfy and cushy.
I’m about to buy my first set (the brooks series reclining sofa) as an adult but was curious on this subs thoughts/opinions.
IMO way better and not that much more than rooms to go or Ashley. I kinda think those places make cheap furniture.
Any thoughts/opinions or do you have any brand alternatives?
Edit: We ended up going with la-Z-boy! We shopped around about six or seven other places, and the couches did not feel anything as comfortable as the lazy boys

You will get lots of recommendations from people who have old La-Z-Boy pieces, grew up with La-Z-Boy, etc. Old La-Z-Boy were built well, using stick built solid wood frames. New La-Z-Boy, since the last 20 years or so are no longer built that way. About 20 years ago they totally changed their manufacturing methods utilizing computer controlled routers and cutting all the parts out of sheets of plywood. The machines can cut the pieces quickly and in a very precise and consistent way. The precision cut pieces are much easier to assemble into furniture. The benefit to La-Z-Boy was greatly reduced labor and therefore assembly cost. Unfortunately, the plywood kit frames are not as durable as the original solid wood ones were. I know these details because I was a part of the project as a vendor. This method has subsequently become the industry standard in high production manufacturers. If you want furniture with a traditionally built frame, you will have to seek that out specifically.

I know the home decorating folks hate recliners, but my parents had La-z-boys, and we have them. My son inherited his grandfather’s chair. I don’t think I could enjoy my life half as much without them. But! It used to be getting them reupholstered was cheaper than a new chair. Not true anymore. We were going to reupholster our twelve year old ones, but it was just as much as buying new ones.

I’ve read through just about every thread in La-Z-Boy on this subreddit and understand that the quality has declined and probably wouldn’t be considered BIFL…but where on earth else can I find a high-backed sofa that isn’t upwards of 10k?!! (I am typing this slouched against my West Elm mid century nightmare. I am 5’10” what was I thinking??) even the higher-backed sofas at Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn et al are lower than the Colby I’ve been eyeing at La-Z-Boy.
I guess I’m curious if anyone else has been happy enough with their La-Z-Boy to feel like the purchase was worth it, even if they know they’ll have to replace it sooner than they would a BIFL-level sofa? Or if anyone has recommendations for an alternate, truly high-backed sofa up to say 4k?

I do not like their chairs but the consistency of family buying them is predictable. I cannot identify the difference in quality over the year, and if anything thing it may have improved some. Their sofas and loveseats are absolutely better than their old chairs from what I can tell. Worst thing I have seen is I had to tighten some nuts and bolts under one for a family member not too long ago. My father had one that had completely sunk in after like 20 years of use but all the mechanisms etc seemed fine. Luckily steel is relatively cheap to manufacture with.

What do you mean by high-backed? I have the flannel birch sofa from Jordan's. I think they discontinued it at Jordan's, but you can find it elsewhere. Bought it in 2014 and it is good as new and I have not been kind to it. 3 moves, one of which required us to shove it through a just big enough hallway. 1 large dog, no couch cover, and the fabric is flawless. Numerous spills, including red wine, and no stains. If this thing caught fire tomorrow, I'd be going out and buying it again. My only complaint was that the dec pillows which came with it had awful stitching on the decorative part, but I covered them pillows with cheap covers from amazon to spice up the couch and now I don't care.
