Hi everyone,

I just ordered this ThinkPad P16s gen 2 and realized that I might need 32gb ram in near future. I'm okay with 16 GB now, but will need more in future.

I'm upgrading my system's memory, and have two questions about P16 Gen 2's possible memory setups:

Question 1: Does 2x 48GB 5600Mhz RAM run at 5600Mhz or 4000Mhz?

The spec sheet states the 3 following rules:

  1. System comes with DDR5-5600 memory and will run at lower speed due to platform limitations:

  2. 4x 32GB / 4x 48GB configurations run at DDR5-3600.

  3. Other configurations run at DDR5-4000

I don't know whether 2x 48GB falls under #1 or #3.

Question 2: Will 2x 32GB DDR5-4800 RAM work?

"System comes with DDR5-5600 memory" seems to suggest that DDR5-5600 is the minimum and that DDR5-4800 won't boot.

But Lenovo lists various configs that uses DDR5-3600, DDR5-4000, and DDR5-4800 RAM. In particular, 2x 32GB DDR5-4000Mhz is a valid config, which suggests that 2x 32GB DDR5-4800 is valid as well.

However, I suspect the official spec sheet is correct and that lenovo.com system builder is wrong. All P16 Gen 2 will ship with DDR5-5600 memory due to "system comes with DDR5-5600 memory".

(My system uses non-ECC memory so everything above only pertains to the non-ECC memory configs. ECC memory configs is a whole different story.)

2x48GB should fall under #3. According to the CTO builder for the P16 Gen 2, the only way you can get faster RAM speeds is if you use a single 8 or 16GB stick. Even then it maxes out at 5200MHz. The listed RAM speeds for the various models are the speeds that you're actually gonna get. If you take a look at the parts list (hover over the select commodity dropdown and check the memory box), you will see that all of the stock RAM sticks are 5600MHz. As the PSREF mentions, the lower speeds are due to a platform limitation. 2x32 4800MHz should work as it would be limited to 4000MHz anyway. Just remember that when you change the RAM configuration, you might have to wait for the machine to do the RAM training before it boots. This could take a few minutes.

I have my eyes set on a P16 g2 thinkpad but I want to upgrade the RAM from 32gb to 64gb. Not sure if the memory is soldered or it can be swapped. I see the gen 1 is swappable but before I pull the trigger on a gen 2 configuration I want to be sure I can upgrade the memory.

Check the site. If the memory is SODIMM then it's removable and upgradable. If they show as LPDDR5 then it's soldered. LPDDR are mainly soldered directly to the motherboard.

I have a P16 gen 2 and looking at starting to run some machine learning projects, the first of which is recommending 128g RAM due to processing large files. Seems like as good excuse as any to upgrade the RAM in my machine - currently sitting at 32g.

What has been y'all's experience with massive RAM upgrades? Anyone maxed out at 192g yet?

P16 Gen 2 here with 96GB running at DDR5-4000. I brought a set of Mushkin Enhanced Redline 96GB (2 x 48GB) MRA5S560LKKD48GX2 off Newegg for $250 USD. Perfectly happy with it. Might upgrade to 192GB in the future if I need it. Keep in mind, though, that there's a slight trade off with 192GB: 4x 32GB / 4x 48GB configurations run at DDR5-3600. So there's a very very slight speed penalty for anything above 96GB. Four sticks consumes more power than two sticks. Due to these two reason (and that I'm poor), I chose to stick with 96GB for now.

I currently have a P15 Gen1 With upgraded Ram 128GB, 2x 2TB NVMe drives, i7-10750H, T1000 GPU

I am looking at the P16 Gen2, but I want more CPU cores and a better graphics card.

I use a lot of Virtual machines and do some light Solidworks.

I was looking at the i9-13950HX and the NVIDIA® RTX™ 2000 Ada

Is Intel and the P16 still the way to go? or is there a better bang for your Buck AMD option?

The closest AMD option is the P16v Gen 1 AMD. However, the GPUs are limited to 35w of power vs 60w for the P16 Gen 2. The P16v also only has two RAM slots while the P16 has four. Both have two M.2 2280 slots, and both lack an RJ45 LAN jack. Just FYI, I would recommend getting the RTX 3500 Ada over the RTX 2000 Ada since the higher tier P16 GPUs come with a vapor chamber cooler vs normal heat pipes for the lower options. That's if you can swing the extra cost. Although you could drop down to an i7 instead of the i9 to offset the cost. I have an i7-12850HX in my P16 Gen 1 and Cinebench R23 scores ranged from 18-20k with the vapor chamber cooler.
