r/Bedding on Reddit: Duvet Insert for HOT Sleeper
June 7, 2025 -

Hey everyone.

I recently bought a new duvet cover (cotton percale) and the lightest down comforter I could find. Despite keeping the room at 64 degrees at night, I'm still hot.

What material would you guys recommend for a hot sleeper like me? Cotton insert? Something else?

If you have any specific products in mind, all I want is a king-sized insert that has loops on the corners so I can tie the insert to the drawstrings that are built into the duvet cover.

Thanks you!

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who responded. I appreciate all the good suggestions. I ended up buying the Your Moon wool blanket. Checked all the boxes of what I was looking for: All natural materials, corner loops, lightweight will still having some heft, and very reasonably priced.

Used it last night for the for the first time and couldn't have been happoer. It was perfect.

Definitely recommend it for other hot sleepers.

Best cooling/lightweight duvet insert?!
I've been looking myself (Florida) and I'm starting to think silk filled is the way to go. I've also read good things about wool filled, but I'm leaning towards silk as they're cheaper. Wool just screams winter to me. That said, in the meantime, I've been using a thick cotton blanket or my duvet insert that's not filled and honestly they've been very comfy. More on reddit.com

Duvet Insert for HOT Sleeper
This is the only insert I can stand in the hot summer months, and even then I usually just use it like a quilt without the cover because I don't need the added layers of warmth. More on reddit.com

Duvet insert that isn’t hot
No, you're correct that there is nothing that is fluffy/puffy like down that is cool in summer. Such a thing doesnt' really exist and the only thing that can come close to it in terms of 'fluffiness' is silk. Silk all the way if you want something that isn't too hot during summer. Down is just not practical for summer unless you're cranking the AC on at 70F and below temps (even with ultralightweight down as u/MaximsDecimsMeridius says). I would rec a summer weight silk insert, it will be thin but it'll keep you cool like a champ. Good brands are: St Geneve (expensive), THXSilk, Mommesilk, ElleSilk and DaniaDown (if you want larger sizes like Super King). Wool in summer weight will also work pretty well, though I feel that silk is the better option in terms of breathability for summer but wool tends to be even thinner than silk can get in summer weight. What Is The Best Material For A Cooling Comforter?
There is no one best material for a cooling comforter, but there are a few that stand out as being the most desirable. Lightweight comforters made using down, silk, lyocell, bamboo viscose and cotton percale are all good choices. “Linen and cotton fabrics are more breathable and allow for a cooling effect, which is better if you run warm,” Dr. Abbasi-Feinberg says.

Best cooling comforter: 6 options for sweat-free sleep | Homes and Gardens
November 14, 2024 - Out of all the fill types, down is designed to retain heat, so it might not be the best bet for summer or seriously hot sleeper. Feather: filled with both quills and barbs (the filaments of feathers), a feather duvet feels heavier than down. Those barbs are more robust and less expensive than just quills, but they're still designed to retain heat. Silk: if you're allergic to feathers, but you still want to sleep under a natural duvet, then silk is a great alternative. It's lightweight, thermoregulating, and undeniably luxurious, but it's often more expensive than down.

June 25, 2025 - Plus, the corners have anchor loops if you want to use it as a duvet insert. Who should get it: This is a high-quality comforter for those shopping on a budget. The lightweight version in queen-size retails for $110, which we'd consider an excellent value -- and that's before factoring in the brand's frequent discounts. While I wouldn't say the outer shell is soft or cool to the touch, the comforter is lightweight. Made of 100% cotton, there are also all-season and winter thickness options, but hot sleepers should stick to the lightweight version.
