r/Flooring on Reddit: Question about roll out vinyl flooring
December 5, 2023 -

I haven't done it before, but I got a few rolls to put in my shed. I already know it'll need to be lined up and patched, so I'll have a few seams (I'm not too worried about it, the furniture will mostly be in that area anyway)

My dad told me vinyl roll out flooring sucks, in that the glue makes it hard and air bubbles get trapped and it cracks under your feet, and suggested I staple it in the corners and call it a day

I think that's ridiculous and a terrible idea, because previously when we had roll out flooring that wasn't glued, it got all torn up and it was terrible (because furniture moving across a floor that's not actually on the floor tore it up in spots)

What am I missing that I need to do roll out flooring. I don't have a big steel barrel thing to press out the air or anything on this flooring. If I lay it down without doing that, will it actually crack and be terrible, or probably be fine?

Is there any application of roll out flooring where it's not glued down and it isn't a disaster?

Thanks to anyone willing to indulge my stupidness 👍

I just laid sheet vinyl for the first time after a lot of research I went ahead and did full spread glue, was super easy for it was my first time and it turned out great with zero experience in flooring. I bought eco20 ultra bond and a 1/16 x1/16 square holes trowel and quarter round to hide my janky edges that I just cut 1/4 inch away from the wall the quarter round his the gap so it looks straight and clean. But I cut the floor out first to size with a few extra inches every where then I brought it to the room and cut it to exact size with 1/4 inch gap every where so it can expand with temperature changes, then I rolled up half the floor without shifting it, and glued half the floor using the trowel to spread it evenly, let the glue sit for 20-60 min till it’s tacky and clearish in color, then roll the floor back down and use any sort of roller to push the air bubbles out from the center outward, can even use a push broom for this, then unroll the other unglued half and do the same then lay the quarter round and your done. what I’ve read you want to do full spread glue anytime you can, for long lasting durability and looking good, if after you glue you have bubbles you can simply poke a hole to release trapped air and add some glue in the hole and smush it back down

Dude, don't stress too much about it! I threw some roll-out vinyl in my garage last summer, and it's holding up fine. No big steel barrel here either. I just laid it down, smoothed out the major wrinkles, and it's been chill. If you're paranoid about air bubbles, you can use a broom or something to push them to the edges. Forget stapling; that sounds like a hassle. As long as it's not a high-traffic area, you should be good. Just make sure the surface is clean before laying it, so no weird bumps mess with your vibe.

So far, most of the flooring businesses I have been too, do not offer remnant pieces of linoleum flooring, as demonstrated by Joe Fugate in his DVD video series. Any suggestions other than buying actual flooring how i might acquire long and narrow pieces to use for backdrops.

r/Flooring on Reddit: Is there vinyl sheet flooring today that is comparable to what was around 16 years ago and/or anything that won't tear within a year?
June 30, 2023 -

We are having to replace very old floor due to flooding and we are stuck with what the insurance will pay for. They are supposed to replace with something comparable. What we have was there when we bought the house but I can say that it probably was very close to the cheapest available 16 years ago, BUT somehow it still seems to be far more durable than what we are reading about all of the vinyl sheeting out there today. I don't know if this is accurate, but I can take a piece of this stuff and ROLL IT INTO A TUBE without it breaking! had to cut it off with a knife to get the sample. However, even the contractor says all vinyl sheeting today is crappy and the reviews all include consumers who say theirs ripped from every day use, very very quickly (less than a year). I also have a relative who had this happen to her. I do not know where to go from here.

I need my kitchen put back together but it's going to be super hard to convince the insurance company to pay for a different kind of floor unless I can explain/prove that what's out there today just isn't the same.

Meanwhile, if it were available, I'd prefer vinyl sheeting because it's softer and easier on the joints plus no cracks in the floor means I don't have to worry about food getting in the cracks when this old house settles. (it's from the 50s and the floor is not level anymore, and especially now that they are rebuilding a joist and one corner of the kitchen is jacked up!)

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Is Linoleum still a thing and where do you get it?
February 24, 2023 -

I have an old house and a room that needs a new floor. It needs to be easy to clean and disinfect. I would prefer flooring that can be put down as a sheet, with as few joining cracks as possible.

Due to the character of my house, I would really love to use the kind of vintage printed linoleum that people’s grandparents had. I looked up where to get reproduction linoleum but I can’t find it anywhere. Everything close to what I want is vinyl sheet flooring, which I’ll do if there’s really no other choice, but I don’t love it. It’s even hard to find linoleum when you don’t care about the pattern or what color it is. I wonder if I am missing a search term or something.

My dad’s in a business where he sometimes has to source home improvement materials. I asked him this question and he said he hasn’t seen it for 20 years. He suggested posting ISO on Craigslist.

Does anyone know where to find new, new old stock, or like new linoleum flooring?
