What kind of plants do well outdoors with direct sunlight?
Cactus and succulents will take a lot. Even then, you have to make sure you buy ones that say they take full sun. They can still burn and die despite this because there’s sun, then there’s Sacramento sun. Other options are some California natives. Some are pretty hardy in direct sun but like mentioned can die, because well, Sacramento. More on reddit.com

What plants are low maintenance and good in a front garden with lots of sun?
Head on down to the garden store and grab yourself some zinnias (or seeds), black-eyed susans, echinacea, snapdragons and a variety of sedum. It'll be flowering and growing like crazy in no time! Low maintenance plants for full sun area? NC piedmont.
Hi, I'm in the NC piedmont, full sun, clay soil. I would guess that most natives need some watering for a year or two to get established. And of course getting rid of invasives can be an ongoing market! Earlier this year I planted muhly grass, thread leaf coreopsis, Arkansas bluestar, bee balm, and October skies aster. Everything is doing well in those conditions you specified, and I'm especially impressed with the October skies aster and muhly grass. You can take a look at my post history to see how it looks currently! More on reddit.com

June 19, 2024 -

After living in a city for 8 years with no patio or outdoor space of my own - I’ve moved to a larger space that has a beautiful, small patio. Exploring a whole new world of plants that I can leave outdoors for the summer has been so much fun. A lot of my indoor plants have moved outside full time for the summer (bird of paradise, succulents, wandering dude) but this has also allowed me to unlock a whole new genre of plants and blooms that I previously never any reason to buy or think about. Some of my new patio plants are my new favorites in my collection.

My current favorite is my Moss Rose (also know as the 10 AM plant which is when it’s peak bloom daily) - it puts out fresh blooms every day and has these really cool Dr Seuss succulent looking stems.

June 2, 2025 - If you need an easy, low-maintenance shrub for a hedge or informal erosion control, abelia is a good choice. This plant is a functional, smaller shrub that grows dense and leafy. Flowers are tiny pinkish white trumpets and bloom from summer until early fall. A fully flowering abelia is quite attractive, and the flowers are fragrant. In the fall, leaves turn a pretty purple hue. Plant abelia in a location with full sun to part shade.

r/Sacramento on Reddit: What kind of plants do well outdoors with direct sunlight?
August 21, 2023 -

I’ve had some bad luck with trying to keep things alive on my porch, which gets a good amount of direct sunlight in the hottest part of the afternoon.

There’s things I can do to mitigate this threat with shade and placement, to some extent, but a good amount of my available real estate gets cooked in the hot part of the day.

Aside from cacti what else can I put out there without having to worry about it getting destroyed?
