r/mac on Reddit: Need Advice on an Old Mac Tower – How Much Is It Worth?
January 10, 2025 -

Hey everyone!

I’ve got an old Mac Pro (Mid 2012) tower that I recently powered on, and it still works perfectly. I’m trying to figure out what it might be worth and whether it’s worth selling, upgrading, or holding onto for future use.

Here are the specs:

Mac Pro (Mid 2012) Processor: 3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon RAM: 12 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB Storage: It has a hard drive (unsure of the exact size) It’s in good condition with some minor wear on the exterior but nothing major.

I’ve seen mixed opinions online — some say these machines have nostalgic value, while others say they’re not worth much due to their age.

Could anyone help me with:

A rough estimate of what this Mac Pro might be worth on the used market? Whether it’s worth upgrading (like adding more RAM or an SSD)? If there’s any demand for these towers from collectors, tinkerers, or anyone else?

Note, I am in Australia, I'm not sure that the market would be that big for these compared to Europe or USA.

I appreciate any advice or insights you have! Thanks in advance!

What is the difference between a Mac Pro Tower and a PC? Why would someone pay more for a Mac Pro Tower if it has less performance than a PC? - Quora
Answer: The Mac Pro had equal performance to an Intel PC when it was released in 2019. It cost about $ 50,000 at most. An equivalent HP PC cost about half that. Who wants to be cheap when a few Dollars more buy you a real Apple?

Sure, a Mac Pro setup can cost $53K, but here's why that's not as crazy as it sounds - CNET
December 15, 2019 - There's been some freakage over the fact that you can max out Apple's new, long-awaited tower Mac Pro at roughly $53,000. But aside from the custom $400 wheels, it's laughable that that price has made headlines.

r/macpro on Reddit: Time to buy another used Mac tower what do you think about this model?
February 25, 2022 -

I'm looking at the 2009 Xeon X5482 (Harpertown/Penryn) series to replace my 2006 quad core 2.66 model w/Snow Leopard. Yep that's old!!!

My start up drive shows logo and the spin but then shows orange stripes on the screen and goes nowhere after that. This machine has worked great for years. Not sure what happened and have tried all the keys and tricks and still no go.

I have a mac mini 2012 i5 I got in December just so I could get on the internet, but I'll will have to buy those extra cables just to connect to the Firewire on the tower to maybe look inside, really not sure if Mojave will let me look inside the tower. I would hate to waste the money on those cables I've already priced when I could upgrade quite a bit for the newer model.

So question is as a replacement would you pay $250 for it as my workstation for FCP and PS4? It comes with Lion but I have the mini with Mojove to get on the web for use.

Thanks for any help and this is my first post here.

Tony

Just to confirm, are you asking if it's worth purchasing a newer Mac Pro 4,1 (2009), or upgrading the CPU in your current Mac Pro (2006)? Your post is a bit confusing. Also the Mac Pro 4,1 (2009) uses the Intel Nehalem or Bloomfield chipset. Harpertown was the chipset before this one IIRC. If you're asking if a Mac Pro 4,1 that's in working condition is worth $250, I'd say depends on the specs and overall condition of the computer. There's a few tweaks/upgrades you'll need to do if you want it to run Mojave through Big Sur reliably. While these machines officially support up to El Capitan, there's a couple of popular patchers that will allow you to run newer versions of macOS on unsupported models (dosdude1 patcher or Open Core). I'm still using my Mac Pro 4,1 (and actually bought another one recently to have as a spare). I'm running High Sierra and using an Nvidia Quadro K600 graphics card (supports the Metal API used in Mojave and newer versions), which can technically run up to Big Sur. Not sure what your acronyms are at the bottom. Final Cut Pro and Play Station 4?

It depends what you're using it for. I have a 5,1 And it's a pretty capable machine after I upgraded the CPU and the RAM. I have it as a dual boot machine with high Sierra and Windows 10 and it works pretty good for some low to medium range gaming and music DAW. I'm not really an expert or anything I joined this sub so I could learn more about it myself. I understand there's a way to flash the 4,1 to 5,1 But I'm not sure if there are major hardware limitations on the 4,1. Personally I can recommend the 5,1 just in my experience, but I did get it for a very reasonable price, not street prices.
