It doesn't really matter who you're interviewing for. Some basic tips that I can think of for just interviewing in general is to have good body language, ALWAYS ask a question at the end of the interview when they ask. Even if you don't actually have one, come up with something. Shows that you care. Maybe go on the company site and pick out 1 or 2 things that you can bring up in the interview. Again, it shows that you care & and that you took the time to learn about the company. Since this is a tech interview, be prepared for a potential pop quiz. Just do your best and be honest if you don't know something & just move onto the next one. Also, not everyone is outgoing & extroverted, so if that's you then try to add a little expressiveness and emotion in what you say. I worked for many years at a large fintech company that had BizOps engineers. Would be funny if it turned out to be the same one… The position was essentially production support. They had elevated server access and carried the pager for 24-hour support of our apps. They also had the responsibility of ensuring proper change management procedures were followed for every release, and that new apps were designed with minimum reliability and observability standards met (i.e., appropriate monitoring and logging using the standard company-wide solutions). Management had a goal of BizOps focusing on on automation but in reality the team lacked a lot of the skills/training to be truly successful. So while there were some overlaps with SRE, I wouldn’t say that the teams approached problems with a SWE mindset, which to me is the big differentiator between BizOps and SRE in my experience. As for pivoting to product management, I could see some benefits to being in BizOps if you can get a good understanding of how a product’s intentions line up with the reality of running in production with real customers. And I personally feel that spending time supporting apps gives people a greater appreciation for things like good logging, sensible error messages, how mistakes can have real human impact, etc., which can lead them to care more about designing/building apps that people want (or at least don’t hate) to use and support.
