r/movies on Reddit: Slightly obsessed with Michael Douglas period 1984-2006
March 2, 2024 -

I grew up watching Michael Douglas movies, beginning with Romancing the Stone (1984), through films such as Fatal Attraction, Wall Street, War of the Roses, Basic Instinct, The Game, A Perfect Murder ("How's that for wet work?") plus many others.

I can pretty much watch anything he was in and enjoy it.

The period I love ends with The Sentinel (2006), which I regard as the 'last hurrah' of the 'classic' Douglas persona, where he's a 60-ish year old secret service agent who saved Ronald Reagan, wears shades a lot, and is now shagging the current President's wife, played by Kim Bassinger (I know, legend right), which is kind of ok because they're separated.

At the end of the film, he has to quit the job and the woman he loves, leaving a pining Kim Bassinger behind. I can't help but think this is Douglas also saying goodbye to his golden age.

Lifted from Wikipedia:

According to film historian and critic David Thomson, Douglas was capable of playing characters who were "weak, culpable, morally indolent, compromised, and greedy for illicit sensation without losing that basic probity or potential for ethical character that we require of a hero"

I know he's done a lot of great work since, but I find it really hard to watch anything he's been in since 2006 because it somehow diminishes my perception of him.

Any more Douglas lovers out there?
