A lot depends on the particular style of mid-century modern. I prefer to research the colors selected by the original architect. If it is an Eichler, for example, you can find all the original color schemes online and pick one you like, even if it was not your original color combo. If there are other homes of similar design in the neighborhood, take a weekend to drive by and note what colors you like or dislike. Pay attention to elements like the facia, beams, windows, posts and door. When owners change colors, there are definitely some changes that work, and others that don't. More on reddit.com

April 12, 2023Looking to add Midcentury Modern refresh/flair to my house
I don't understand the killing a gnat with a bazooka. You only needed a decorative vent box for your ac unit. And a new trap door built. What is the fence for? It hides one of the best features of your lot which is the matching trees in front. You needed new foundation plants and some sod. Rebuild that fence down front and carry it from the driveway across the frontage. Whatever roof color you go with, the fascia and soffits need to match it. Likewise, the downspout army, door and window trim.. The roof color you have is fine for a redux. The color it is now would be great to do as a monochromatic trim look. The only thing left is the shutters and I would use new stained wood to match your front door. Nix the storm door. Pressure wash the brick steps they are classic. Then stain the concrete walk to update it. If you don't want the fence you have moved down front, then use it along the driveway on the right-hand side leaving the opening for the sidewalk and going all the way to turn in and adjoin the side of the house. Anything but the odd placement it is now. The shrubs you have along it would be great along the foundation in addition to some others to make it interesting and further blend in the "new" vented wooden ac cover. More on reddit.com

Let me start by saying I love the mid century modern look, and realllly wish to preserve this home the best I can.
We bought this beautiful MCM ranch last year. The exterior needs new siding, and a fresh coat of paint in the bricks. The windows are original Pela and are beautiful but no longer work. We are getting new windows as well. I am having a hard time deciding whether or not to keep the house white (how it was when we bought it- I know, I never would have painted original brick) or play around with the color a bit. I have attached a photo of the white version, which is how it currently looks. I’m also attaching photos of ideas we’ve been playing around with.

My experience with mid-century modern architecture is that they need to look like the surrounding landscape. This means the lines on the exterior, the colors used, and the landscaping. Anything less is not honoring the style.

Hi fellow mcm fans! We bought a mid century modern house a few years back and basically had to renovate the whole place. I did my best to save original features and keep the mcm style when bringing in new materials.
We are finally at a point where we are ready to paint the exterior of our house! It looks like a patchwork quilt right now with some patched areas etc.
I was thinking originally that I would paint the house white with black trim on the windows, doors, etc. I like the sharp contrast in those colors and down the road we’d like to get a nice bright front door in teal or tangerine.
Does anyone have color schemes they love on a mid century house? Ours is one story - I have a photo but don’t see an easy way to share.
