r/woodworking on Reddit: Other than Festool and Mirka, who makes the best line of sanders?
September 18, 2024 -

I recently picked up a set up of Festool sanders and vacuum that I am not overly impressed with. The tools definitely work well but I am having a hard time justifying the purchase when looking at the cost/finished product ratio. So, I may go back to using my Bosch set up which for the cost worked great.

I will say that something I love about the Festool is the variety of sanders and sanding pads that they sell. They have a sander for every type of job. It’s just too bad they are so expensive.

Before making this transition I wanted to ask what other companies make quality sanders that also offer a variety of options?

Mirka Deros VS Festool ETS EC | Which Sander Should You Buy? - The Wood Whisperer
June 19, 2022 - Today I’m going to try to help you make a decision between the Festool ETS EC150 and the Mirka Deros. The Mirka costs over $125 more and the Festool is already a top of the line sander. So is the Mirka worth it?

Back in 2015 i took the plunge and invested in Mirka Ceros sander. this was a big deal for me then, because at $600 it was the most expensive tool I had purchased at that point, and it was a big step up from the $120 rigid sander I'd been using before, which itself was a big step up from the $30 Canadian Tire sander I had

Sander choices, Mirka / Festool / Other | UK Workshop
March 18, 2015 - Don't forget that there are two Festool 150mm ETS sanders - the 150/3 and 150/5 - with 3mm and 5mm orbits respectively; the 150/5 is a great general purpose sander, aggressive enough with lower-grit abrasives to strip away layers of paint, and gentle enough with P320 for final surface prep. There was a new model out last year with a brushless motor (ETS EC) so you may still be able to get the older model for a discounted price if you check around. That said, it's hard to argue against the Mirka Deros with the dual pads as a good cost-effective solution, assuming a 5" option is useful for the work you do.

r/finishing on Reddit: BIFL finishing sander: Mirka Deos, Surfprep 3x4, or Festool RTS-400? Delta or rectangle?
November 3, 2023 -

So, I want a really good sander for my refinishing work. Most of what I work on is mid century; sculptural, spindly, with close-set details.

Here are my criteria:

  1. Compatible with surfprep's squishy pads. (All fit the bill)

  2. Lowest profile possible. I want to sand spindles on chair backs while minimizing hand sanding. The first challenge will be some Selig/Kofod Larsen Blade chairs, for some idea of what I want to sand..

  3. Enough whoopass that I can use it to remove recalcitrant finishes off of larger flat surfaces like table tops. I know a little orbital isn't perfect for that, but it's a start before I can buy a complimentary bigass RO.

  4. Excellent dust collection.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Surfprep and Deos for their reduced heights. However, the Surfprep would be significantly less expensive to get into. I can get a Surfprep with a bunch of squishy abrasives for about $650. The Mirka would probably be 50-100 more to get into. The Festool is easily the least expensive, but it's also much taller. I have concerns about tight spaces.

Right now, it seems like the rectangular sanders are a better fit than the deltas, seeing as I can use the corners of the rectangle just as I might the point of a Delta.

Those with experience on multiple models, could I get some input?

Alternative to Mirka 6" Sander? | Detailing World Forum
DA Sander Just bought one of these off the 'bay -£39 all in. It has the small orbit size of 2.5mm or 3/32" and a 6" velcro pad. It's actually advertised as a finishing sander. Did a LOT of searching and checking specs to find this sander.

July 12, 2022 - You got a couple years out of a $20 sander. I think it did a great job lol. For the price I’ve been very happy. For $50+ the dewalt and Milwaukee both let me down. I will try yours next! ... I think the Bosch is an underrated player in the game. Its not in the Mirka or Festool tier, but for $60, I don't expect or need it to be.

June 25, 2017 - ... Rotex is a very different animal. The ETS EC 150/x is more like the Deros. I tried the Deros - fine sander, lightweight, low, great in the hand, but I didn't get on with the flappy paddle thing, so not for me.
