I’m working on a mixed-use project and am trying to decide between Pac-clad metal cladding and Nichiha fiber cement panels for wrapping a wood-framed building. Both materials have their appeal, but I’d love to hear from anyone with firsthand experience, especially in terms of cost, durability, ease of installation, and maintenance. How long is the warranty for each product? You can request physical samples. Make a spreadsheet and compare pros and cons like installed cost per sf, warranty, esthetics, etc. Study details from both systems. What is your attachment system and detailing? It can be a little more involved but you could also compare any other things you may care about like embodied carbon footprint. Finding out where they are manufactured means you could find one has shorter leads times, lower shipping costs, and potentially better customer service if you get connected with a rep in your area. Don’t know about pad-clad but if you go with fiber cement on wood framed make sure the installers find the studs behind the sheeting, and nail on them only. I’ve seen way too many apartment buildings and four story houses here in Texas where the installers just nailed anywhere they wanted because they felt secure that the nails grabbing the sheeting underneath would be enough. Well it isn’t, after all few years those panels become quite loose and nails start to pop out. Also depending on your code go with ring shank nails instead of smooth for the fiber cement panels. Oh and go with a high quality paint, again seen way to many of these building end up looking like shit and having to repair all of that is a big ordeal.

Does anyone have experience with using nichiha siding?
I have 1 estimate from a contractor that only uses nichiha unless we specifically request Hardie. He swears by it but we have 5 other estimates that are for Hardie. The guy is a bit odd but was extremely confident in his work, he drove us around to show us his work. So I'm digging around trying to find why nichiha might be better, Google doesn't provide much. Also his quote was quite reasonable and beat several Hardie quotes.

Just my 2 cents. I built a shed im 2006 and used Hardie boards. Exterior is as good as the day it was built. That said, based on what I read about N, I wouldn't hesitate to use it if it had been available at the time. I saw that it originated in Japan decades ago for their buildings and now they manufacture in US, so two positives. I am guessing that their pricing reflects their lack of brand awareness compared to H.
