Creating a no-lawn front garden - Harmony in the Garden
July 23, 2021 - After designing gardens for over 20 years, I’ve noticed more and more people want to replace their little-used front lawn with an environmentally friendly garden. The main stumbling block, however, is they aren’t quite sure what to do once the lawn is gone.I hear variations of the same concerns: it’ll look too much like a desert, it won’t be lush, it’ll be too sparse or it won’t have enough color. Therefore, I thought it might be helpful if I show a few before and after photos of a new garden’s progress in the hopes it inspires you to re-think your front lawn!
For all of you who think grass is dumb - show me your 1 acre+ property that's devoid of grass so I know what you want me to be doing.
I have a 2.5 acre property that I’m slowly converting to host native plants and native grasses. Much of it was mowed lawn and I’ve started the process by only mowing edges and pathways and letting the rest grow long. I let all of my grass grow long last year and it was amazing to see red winged blackbirds on the property for the first time. I’m learning that in winter when grasses form mounds under snow that these mounds create “lodging” for birds who can eat the grass seed as well during winter. Long grass provides also protective cover for mammals and insects. Another thing that happens when you create paths is that instead of taking the shortest route across the grass, with curving pathways you create a more pleasant walking experience. I used to never walk on the solid mowed grass areas of my property and now I do the path walks every day. In general, cut grass does not provide anything to the ecology, and it is usually non-native. Native grasses and plants provide seeds, pollen, nectar, sustenance and shelter. Now we are spending half as much time mowing, enjoying the mowing process more, and are learning about how to restore our small ecosystem with native plants. It’s a fascinating and rewarding journey. What people often object to when it comes to gardens that are not solid lawn is that they look messy or unkempt. A way to avoid this is to keep mowed pathways tidy, spend time in your garden and to do mass planting areas so that you get broad swathes of color when things bloom. When using grasses, they look so gorgeous in a large area when the wind blows. mowed path example More on reddit.com

Still cannot believe I did this. Second and third year, none of the plants will work for you as I'm in 9B but here is mine. What a difference a year makes : r/NoLawns (reddit.com) I water new plants for the first year so most of this hasn't been watered for 1 full year. Make it a full garden with trees, shrubs, grasses as well as perennials, annuals and bulbs. Spring seems to take care of itself and you have to work hard to make late season just as wonderful. Concentrate on getting late season stuff on the shopping list before fitting in the wonderful spring flowers. Most of my stuff also has great foliage too. Folks grow Aloe for the leaves as much as the flowers and the yellow flowering Bulbine has nice tufts of bright green onion shaped leaves. More on reddit.com

I genuinely want to know, because I can't fathom any design that would be a net gain ecologically while also being affordable, attractive, and practical.
Of course a 500 SF garden in front of your townhouse makes sense, but I'm not really sure how you want me to go about filling, say, 20,000 SF with non-grass in a climate where grass thrives naturally.
Please post pictures, because reading the sweeping statements and vague platitudes haven't really helped me understand the specifics of the process nor the goal.

"Where grass thrives naturally" is the key there. Plant native grasses. I have a huge lawn. It is mostly native species, a lil bit of non native closest to the house (shade/ease of control), and clover and dandelions for bees. Non native species, grass or otherwise, rarely bring anything good to the table. Local critters generally don't know what to do with non native species, creating an ecological dead zone. Non native species also generally require more upkeep (meanwhile, I have never once watered nor fertilized my lawn in the 5 years I've had it). Grass has its place, but too often people are bringing in invasive species that deplete the soil and demand water.

June 12, 2019 - Arbutus unedo ‘Compacta’ Dwarf Strawberry Tree will become our focal point for the front entry and our picture window view. This large shrub or small tree looks wonderful in winter with its red “strawberries” and yes the fruit drop can be a little messy. If you are a neat nik pass on this plant. My clients loved the color of the bark, color of the berries and are prepared to deal with some fruit drop. Butterflies use this plant for a host so don’t be alarmed if you see a large number of one kind of caterpillar on it. Do nothing and enjoy the show.
